If you're a business professional with three to five years of experience under your belt and you're aiming to advance in the workplace by getting an MBA degree, then the GMAT is your next stop on the way to success.

The GMAT is the Graduate Management Admission Test and it serves as the entrance exam for nearly 2,000 graduate business and management programs around the globe. This means that GMAT scores are a major part of the admission process for the majority of MBA programs. While GMAT scores may not factor into the decision-making process for each and every MBA program, it's safe to say that nearly all of the most widely-known MBA programs do require applications to be accompanied by a GMAT score.

This means that preparing for and taking the GMAT is a smart and more often than not, mandatory, move to make while preparing to climb the corporate ladder. But before we examine the ways in which you can benefit from the GMAT, let's take a look at the test itself.

The GMAT covers three areas in order to assess the skill-level of applicants. These are Analytical Writing, Quantative Reasoning, and Verbal Reasoning. ...

The Analytical Writing section is usually the first part of the test, and it consists of two essay questions one analyzing an argument and the other analyzing an issue. Students are given 30 minutes per question and the end results are reviewed a total of three times.

The essays are first reviewed by Intellimetric, a computer program created to analyze the structure of writing pieces. The next two reviewers are human readers who assess the overall quality of writing, as well as the student's ability to organize, present, and support their own ideas.

The written essays are followed by an extensive multiple choice quantitative section dealing with mathematics, and finally a verbal section.

The GMAT differs from many other standardized tests in that it is primarily intended to analyze skill sets that typically emerge and develop over a long time period. It is not used to gauge the retention of specific data, such as that which would be typical of a college test. Likewise, it is not a means to measure knowledge in a particular subject.

Rather, the three sections of the GMAT are designed to provide an overview of your applied problem solving skills. The different sections, although they cross a variety of subjects such as math and writing skills, are intended to work in unison to deliver one overall result your level of ability.

Because the GMAT is designed to calculate a comprehensive assessment of your ability, it is of considerable importance to most MBA graduate programs. In fact, your GMAT score is considered to accurately reflect the odds of your success in an MBA program. Right away, you can see how the GMAT is directly tied into your future success.

In these times of recession, more professionals are opting to return to school in order to obtain an MBA that can help them into a higher paying job. However, this also means that competition for admission into an MBA program is very high. In fact, nearly a quarter of a million people now apply to MBA programs yearly and that number is expected to rise.

In most cases, admission into an MBA program is primarily dependent on three factors: Undergraduate GPA, Work Experience, and GMAT Score.

If you're planning to go for your MBA, in most cases the importance of your GMAT can't be stressed enough. Although you may already have several years of professional experience, your work experience can only carry you so far in terms of graduate school admission. And as more time passes between you and your undergraduate days, even a stellar college GPA becomes less of a factor. Other things, like how well your interview was received, also figure into the decision but rarely in a major way.

The GMAT, on the other hand, gives you the opportunity to actually provide a standardized and measurable example of your potential and ultimately your bankability.

In other words, the GMAT provides a chance for you to show exactly what you're made of and to use that evidence in the pursuit of a more fulfilling career and a higher income.
