Digital Grain Scale

The grain unit is, as the name implies, the backbone of grain scales. A grain (gn) was historically, originally based on the mass of a standard cereal seed. The unit is now most frequently used in archery and ammunition, both of which require a high level of precision. The digital versions of these scales offer users an easier and more accurate measuring process. Digital grain scales of high quality, regardless of purpose, have several common features.
The most common and basic feature is a large LCD display. This screen provides you with the measurements so it’s vital that it be clear and simple. Some scales even offer backlighting in this area. Nearly all grain scales are compact; most can easily fit into a small box, giving you portable precision. Additional LCD lighting, then, is an asset since it guarantees an easy-to-read measurement whether you’re working in the sun’s glare or the dimness of your shop.
Another basic feature offered by quality scales is multiple power options. The ability to use either batteries or an AC power cord will further enable you ...
... to make the most of the scale’s portability. With both options available, you’re neither tied to the nearest power outlet nor forced to waste your batteries while directly next to one. You have complete control over the situation. The best solution is the use of rechargeable batteries.
Additional versatility comes with the capacity to weigh items in units other than grains. Grams and ounces are probably the most common additional units found on grain scales. Though they aren’t essential, they do make the scale multi-purpose. You can, for example, use the grams feature to measure liquids, powders and small parts.
Furthermore, since grain scales are used in situations that require a high level of accuracy, the scale should measure out to at least 1/10th of the unit. Likewise, a quality machine will come with some sort of covering to protect the scale when not in use. Scales, especially those that are designed for smaller units like the grain, are highly sensitive. A cover will protect it from dust build-up, spills, and other items that can negatively impact a reading. Some models even feature a cover that doubles as a measuring tray.
For those using grain scales to hand load cartridges and shells, it is strongly recommended that you use a scale that offers some type of detachable tray for measuring. Metering out granules and powder on a surface that you can individually clean will improve the overall accuracy and longevity of the scale because the machine will not see so much particle build-up and wear. Metal trays are less common, but ideal since they help reduce static electricity.
Though you want a digital grain scale that is versatile, simplicity is still vital. A good scale will provide you with all necessary features and no complications. Essential calibration functions should be uncomplicated and easy-to-perform.
Prices of digital grain scales range from one hundred, to several hundred dollars, so finding the right model for your budget and needs shouldn’t prove difficult.
