Discover The World’s Highest Lake At The Annapurna Circuit Trek!

The
annapurna circuit Trek is ranked among the most popular treks in Nepal. Beginning with an easy trail, the path gets a little difficult where Kaligandaki connects to the Marsyangdi River Valley. The special attraction of this trek remains the Thorung La Pass that is located at an altitude of 5416 m.
The Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho Lake and Poon Hill is a complete 20-day affair. On the trail, you visit the highest lake in the world-Lake Tilicho that is located in the Manang district of the Everest country, Nepal.
Highlights of the Trek
While the initial part of the trek is the same as the Annapurna Circuit Trek, there is a diversion from Manang from where the trekkers need to head to the main valley to the west and then finally trek up to Lake Tilicho. Post this, the trail joins back to the standard route of Annapurna Circuit Trek where it crosses the highest pass in the world-the Thorong La Pass.
Another major attraction of the trek is Poon Hill. One can get the spectacular views of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna from ...
... here.
Apart from the adventures such as the Thorung La Pass, the trail has mystic beauties to offer. From beautiful sceneries to diverse ecosystems, different landscapes to different cultures, oak forests in a green blanket to lush paddy fields, the trek is as diverse as it could get!
While on the trek you will also enjoy outstanding vistas of Annapurna at 8097 m, Dhaulagiri at 8167 m, Manaslu, Tukuche, and Machhapuchhre along with some other peaks completing the scenery. Another fascinating adventure on the trail is trekking the deepest gorge in the world- the Kaligandaki Gorge.
The flora and fauna on the trail is another beautiful story. The Rhododendrons in a beautiful shade of red cover the hills of the valley in the spring and give it a majestic look. The entire trail is surrounded by several orchid forests that give you a feeling that you are surrounded in a green blanket.
Lake Tilicho — the highest lake in the world
Tilicho Lake remains the identity of the Annapurna Circuit Trek. Considered as the highest lake in the world, it collects the glacial melt from the northern slopes of Annapurna and also the Thorang peak. It is located at an elevation of 4919 m. The crystal clear lake is often regarded as the highest lake in the world for its size besides the fact that there are other lakes at a higher altitude in Nepal itself and in Tibet too.
The lake is the final destination of a popular side hike of the standard Annapurna Circuit Trek and it can take an extra 3 to 4 days to complete it.
As per the Nepali Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, there has been no record of any kind of aquatic organism in the lake since 2003.
The highest lake in the world also has a religious significance. As per the Hindu mythology, Tilicho lake is the same lake (Kak Bhusundi) that finds a mention in the valued epic of the religion—the Ramayana. As the popular belief has it, Kak Bhasundi, a sage narrated the Ramayana to a Garuda, the king of birds near this very lake. While narrating the story, the sage took the outward appearance of a crow. Since ‘Kak’ means ‘crow’ in Sanskrit, the name of the sage was ‘Kak Bhusundi’.
Another interesting fact about the Tilicho lake
is that it has also been recorded as the highest ever site for scuba dive. In the year 2000, a Russian team conducted a scuba dive in the lake.
