Jesus Is God

There are literally hundreds, if not thousands, of religions and sects that claim Jesus as one of their own, but many of them deny his divinity. He is called a good rabbi, a wise teacher, a blessed man, a chosen one, a prophet and many other things, but is denied his rightful title as a member of the Trinity, as God. This is the case with the Jehovah's Witnesses, Unitarians, some Protestant denominations, the so-called science of mind churches and other groups. They deny that Jesus Christ is God.

Were this problem limited to other religions besides the one, true Catholic faith, perhaps it would be somewhat understandable. Yet there are many Catholic leaders that have themselves questioned, even denied, Jesus' divinity, and this kind of heretical teaching has multiplied many times over since Vatican II. In fact, some of the more visible Catholic scholars, such as John Dominic Crossan, propound the same nonsense as so-called High Protestants like the late Bishop James Pike, who denied Christ's place in the Godhead but visited spiritualists to contact his dead son. Still, heresies are expected among non-Catholics.

The problem is that scholastic theorizing and undisciplined questioning has led to a situation today where many Catholic lay people are becoming confused. This should not be the case in the True Church that has not only the Bible but also its many hallowed traditions to call upon for the proof of Jesus' divinity. It is crucial that Catholics with questioning minds, something that God gave us, go to the right sources for answers. They are not to be found with scholars and errant priests that want to pontificate, but with the Pontiff himself and the Word of God that he protects and defends.

Just a cursory study of the Bible will provide verse after verse, proof after Apostolic proof, of Who Jesus truly is. In the very first sentence of the Gospel of St. John we are told, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God" (John 1:1). Even more than this, we have it from the Lord's own mouth later in that Gospel, when he tells a group of doubters, "Amen, amen I say to you, before Abraham was made, I am" (John 8:58). These two small words, "I am," reverberate through the ages and are part of a continuous thread running through the Old and New Testaments, testifying to the truth of Jesus' claim.

The power of "I am"
This particular verse in St. John's Gospel connects the Old and New Testaments, offering an undeniable truth. "I am" is the precise name that God uses for Himself when speaking to Moses from the burning bush. He clearly indicated that He was, is and will always be the first, eternal and only Supreme Being. When Jesus used the same phrase to refer to Himself, He also clearly indicated that He was, in fact, God. The Jews who heard Him were quite clear about what he said, too, since they "took up stones" to kill Him (John 8:59).

Other Old Testament evidence irrefutably indicates the divinity of the Lord Jesus. The prophecy in Isaiah 9:6 is about Jesus, stating that, "For a child is born to us, a son is given to us: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, God the Mighty, the Father of the world to come, the Prince of Peace." How much more straightforward could it be? Still, other prophecies in the OT buttress this one from Isaiah, such as the way that God describes Himself as "the first and the last" in Isaiah 41:4, paralleling Jesus' own statement in the Apocalypse, "I am the first and the last, and behold I am living forever and ever" (Apocalypse 1:17).

Ears to hear
The Bible is clear about the many people who will follow false teachers and prophets, worship alien gods, forsake the True Faith for a counterfeit and otherwise miss the mark (the meaning, it turns out, of "sin"). Besides the many direct statements about Jesus' divinity, these people also ignore the many clear implications of other Scriptures. The manner in which Jesus often spoke is contributes yet more evidence, in the form of what is called implicit Christology, of his standing as God.

For instance, commenting on the commandments of God, Jesus says in the Gospel of St. Matthew (5:28), "You have heard that it was said to them of old: Thou shalt not commit adultery. But I say to you, that whosoever shall look on a woman to lust after her, hath already committed adultery with her in his heart." In this way, Jesus puts his own statement on the same footing with God's. Who else but God would dare correct or reinterpret the Word? Only He Who is, Himself, the Word made flesh, come to dwell among men and offer Himself a ransom for many.

The most important thing is to get correct teaching on the matter. Only the Holy Catholic Church can pronounce inerrantly on these matters, the Church that Jesus founded upon "the rock" of St. Peter. There are no opinions from any other sect or religion that should carry any weight for the sincere follower of Christ. Do not be deceived, especially when your eternal soul is at risk.
