Can I Do My Own Seo?
The answer is, “it dependsâ€Â.
Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, is that part of Internet Marketing focused on achieving the highest rankings on the major search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing.
This process involves a plethora of techniques †some obvious, some not †and while it is tempting for many businesspeople who own websites to tackle this job on their own, doing your own SEO is beyond time consuming. It is not rocket science and it is not brain surgery; but it is not an easy-to-do, finite process that can be accomplished with a “how to†manual or even a consultant.
There are two main tracts to SEO, (1) Onsite Optimization and (2) Offsite Optimization. If SEO was limited to onsite optimization, it is feasible that you could in fact due that on your own by learning all of the geeky elements involved in coding and formulating your web pages (page titles, descriptions, metadata, alt-text, M3 Validation, interlinking, dynamic site maps, etc) so that the search engine crawlers can easily understand what each page of your ...
... website is all about. Even here, there are 100’s of variables and they apply to every page; so while it is feasible to do this on your own, why would you?
You can also do your own keyword research. There are many free tools available and other tools that you pay for. Bottom line is that you must do this and be very good at it because this is the cornerstone of all internet marketing, including SEO. Mistakes here can cost you a fortune.
However, beyond Onsite Optimization and Keyword Research, SEO requires and involves dozens of specialties and sub-specialties that no one person can possibly master or have the time to actually perform on a level that actually will make a difference. These specialties and sub-specialty skills in SEO mainly revolve around the world of Offsite Optimization †those processes that serve to promote the website from the outside-in. Specifically, Google wants to know who / what is linking to you, typically via Backlinks. Backlinks are one-way links originating from someone else’s website pointing directly to your website. It is the quality and the quantity of Backlinks that are the greatest differentiators that the Search Engines use to rank websites on a keyword by keyword basis. Of course, it’s all about relevance. So, how do you make your website relevant in the eyes of Search Engines? CONTENT … GREAT CONTENT … added every week, even every day to your website and possibly an associated blog. Content includes articles, press releases, podcasts, videos, newsletter, animation and much more. The content needs to be added and indexed constantly to keep the crawlers returning to the website to index the new content. Do you have the time, the skill, and the wherewithal, to write 2-4 articles a week targeted on titles relevant to the keyword research? How about a new blog post every day? Animation? New Videos? Press Releases?
Beyond the creation of many forms of content, you still need to get strong, highly respected and authoritative websites to link to you … remember … Backlinks. So you need to know how best to syndicate the content and where the best sites for the type of content are for promoting. You need to optimize the content so that the right keyword(s) is promoted. You need to know about article sites, content sites, Press Release sites, Social Media Sites (not just the ones everyone seems to know), Social Bookmarkers, Commenting Sites and literally dozens more categories. Why do you need to do this? Because Google is watching and what Google deems as important, is important because your goal destination is page 1 of Google; the meeting point with those folks who are looking for you.
After achieving great rankings, you are about 50% covered. Now you must turn your attention more and more to Analytics and ultimately Conversion Optimization. You need to know how to analyze your website stats so you can understand the precise human interaction with each page. You need to know which pages are performing, which are not and why? You need to make design adjustments and corrections to improve the human interaction / engagement / satisfaction with the web page.
Can one person ever have all of the skills, strengths and traits needed to do just what I have discussed here? Is it even possible?
SEO is a professional service requiring well trained professionals. Only an Internet Marketing Company with a staff that spans the full range of know-how and pure talent can really perform top level SEO; and there is no second level because you have to be on page 1.
