The Subaru Outback engine and the Nissan Sentra are both subcompact sedans that are mainstays of their respective maker's U.S. lineups. Each model offers a 2.5 liter engine option, although the design of each automaker's 2.5 liter engine option differs signficantly from the other engine.

The 2.5 liter flat four engine known as the EJ25 is a mainstay of the Subaru lineup. The Subaru Outback engine is different from the Nissan Sentra engine, and most engines on the market, in that it uses a flat four design. The pistons on the Subaru Boxer engine are laid flat and move in a parallel motion to the ground; the Nissan Sentra engine utilizes piston placement that is vertical with the pistons moving in a vertical motion. Subaru believes this flat four engine design makes the engine smoother and more stable. Another benefit of the flat four design is that the engine has a lower profile since the pistons are laying flat, and thus the engine has a lower center of gravity. The latest version of the Subaru Boxer engine produces 170 horsepower at 5600 revolutions ...
... per minute, and is able to reach a torque rating of 170 pound-feet at 4000 revolutions per minute. Fuel is transported in the Subaru Boxer engine uses a sequential fuel induction engine. The Subaru Outback engine also features four valves per cylinder, giving the engine 16 total valves. Fuel economy figures given by the Environmental Protection Agency for the Subaru Outback engine are 19 miles per gallon in city driving and 27 miles per gallon on the highway. The Subaru Outback engines runs on unleaded gasoline, with premium unleaded recommended to extract the engine's maximum power and efficiency.

The 2.5 liter engine in the Nissan Sentra is a traditional straight four engine that was first used in the Sentra in 2007. The engine is the only option available on the Nissan Sentra SE-R and the Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V. Both of these cars are the high performance options of the Sentra line; while both vehicles are equipped with a 2.5 liter engine option, the SE-R Spec V engine produces significantly more performance. In the SE-R model, the Nissan Sentra Engine produce 200 horsepower at 6000 revolutions per minute. In contrast, the SE-R Spec V engine produces 200 horsepower at 6600 revolutions per minute. The higher performance figures are achieved in the Spec V by increasing the compression ration to 10.5: 1; the Nissan Sentra engine in the SE-R has a compression ratio of only 9.5:1. Both of these variants of the Nissan Sentra engine feature direct injection; this feature significantly increases the fuel economyof the Nissan Sentra engine.

About: The Nissan Sentra engine in the SE-R is able to return EPA figures of 24 miles per gallon on the city circuit and 30 miles per gallon on the highway circuit; the Nissan Sentra engine in the SE-R Spec V came in with figures of 21 miles per gallon in the city and 28 miles per gallon on the highway. Both variants of the Nissan Sentra engine are dual overhead cam designs, with four valves per cylinder.
