Located in the Mugla Province of south-western Turkey, Marmaris is one of the fascinating coastal cities in the country. There was a time when it was a sleepy fishing village, but everything changed after the construction boom that happened in the late 20th century. Many resorts and hotels were built and the fishing village became an attractive port city, which resulted in the growth of tourism in this part of Turkey. In recent times, the city's main source of income comes from the tourism sector. Marmaris has also become a major centre for diving and sailing today.

Your Marmaris holidays would be a delightful affair, if you visit in October, as the temperatures are comfortable for sightseeing and other outdoor activities. For those looking for some excellent deals on hotel accommodations, winter from November to March would be the best season. Winters in this part of Turkey are quite pleasant with mild temperatures and rains. Summers are dry and hot with extremely high temperatures during the period between June and September. Tourists ...
... who visit during July or August often complain of uncomfortable heat, which makes them stay in the shade between 12 pm to 3 pm to avoid a sunstroke.

During your Marmaris holidays, you'll be able to visit some historic places that give you a glimpse of its interesting history. Although it is not clear when the city was founded, the ancient Greek historian Herodotus had made the mention of city walls that existed in the region since 3,000 BC. During the 6th century BC, the area was known as Physkos under the rule of Ionian and Dorian Greeks. It was a part of the Caria region, which was invaded by Alexander the Great in the year 334 BC. The inhabitants of the Physkos town burned their valuables in the castle which is known as Marmaris castle today and escaped to the hills upon realising that they would lose the region to the invading army of Alexander.

The savings made on your cheap Marmaris holidays would allow you to explore the popular attractions that are remnants of the Ottoman era. The Ottomans under Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror had conquered the region in the mid-15th century. When Suleiman the Magnificent had set out to conquer the Rhodes, this city had served as a base for his navy. In the year 1957, the Fethiye earthquakes had nearly destroyed the entire city and only the Marmaris Castle was left undamaged along with the historic structures in its surroundings.

In the Mugla province, you can visit the Marmaris Museum, which is housed within the castle that has withstood the test of time since it was first built. It provides some interesting insights into the history and culture of the city. The castle and archaeology museum comprises seven indoor areas, of which, one has been organised as an ethnography lounge and two have been used as an archaeology lounge. Extensive restoration works were carried out on the castle during the period from 1980 to 1990, after which, it was opened to the public as a museum in the year 1991.
