ASUS ZenFone Max Pro M1 Comprehensive Evaluation

ASUS is not an important player in the Western mobile phone market, but it has quietly created mobile phones that are sometimes available worldwide. The iPhone X-esque ZenFone 5 caught our attention in 2018, so we looked at a cheaper option, awkwardly named ZenFone Max Pro M1.
We like it very much because it's easy to import, run Android stock, and have a battery that lasts up to 5000mAh. It's not as ubiquitous as the cheaper Moto and Honor phones in the UK, but that doesn't mean it's not worth your time.

Price and Availability

You must import the ZenFone Max Pro M1 from Asia. Thanks to reputable retailers (we have used it ourselves), it's easy.

Our sample from GearBest, at the time of this writing, is priced at £193.20 for 4GB RAM and 64GB storage. This is the same price as the Honor 10 Lite and Moto G6 and the very similar Xiaomi Redmi Note 5.

... biggest advantage of this phone is simplicity. Our evaluation unit is also silver, a black tablet, not much design highlights, but its function exceeds the form here.

The large 6-inch IPS LCD display has an aspect ratio of 18:9 and can be held in one hand to watch videos and view photos, but keep in mind that it is only 1080p. The back of the phone is made of aluminum, which is a good upgrade to plastic and is not as fragile as the popular glass.

The plastic edge secures it to the small border on the top and bottom of the display, with the dual rear camera and the fingerprint sensor on the back. If derived, it is a neat package.

Based on Android 8.1 Oreo, ASUS's Zen UI software is the best software we've seen on budget phones because it doesn't change anything because of it (unlike Honor's EMUI that has been adjusted many times). It's not Android One, so it can't guarantee two years of updates, like a mobile phone like this, but we got an OTA update when we checked the phone to improve the security of the phone.

Cut Corners

You can tell from the missing things in ASUS that it is an economical mobile phone. Without NFC, frustrating, you can't use Google Pay for contactless shopping. Many other budget phones now include this, so this is a sign against ZenFone.

Now USB-C is gradually entering low-end phones, but the charging speed here is very slow - microUSB Moto G6 Play costs less and charges faster.

Fingerprint sensors are great, but they are very small and not very reliable, but you do have a decent unlocking feature built into the relatively stripped software experience.

The phone also only supports 802.11 b / g / n Wi-Fi, not the latest AC band.

Trump Card

But if you want to get the best battery life from your phone, it may not matter to you, and ZenFone Max Pro M1 can provide better battery life. A huge 5,000mAh battery may charge slowly but you won't mind when it lasts for so long. In our battery test, it lasted 9 hours and 59 minutes. At the time of writing, it was the third longest mobile phone we reviewed.

It also has a dual SIM card tray and a separate microSD card slot (up to 512GB), which means you can use all three at the same time without having to choose between a second SIM card and expandable memory. £200, this is a great feature.

Specification Appeal

Efficient battery life benefits from the efficient Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 chip, Redmi Note 5, BlackBerry Key2 LE and Asus ZenFone 5 (a phone that sells for more than ZenFone Max Pro M1). We play high-end games like Asphalt 9 with almost no delays in the game, which is great, and there is a decent Adreno 509 GPU.

There are several cell phone versions related to the region, but our most common is 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage - again, the price is favorable. You can even use a dual camera that you can pass on your phone. The main 13Mp f / 2.2 shooting game is great during the day, but can be expected to drop in low light conditions - just like all phones in this price range.

The second 16Mp f / 2.4 sensor is used for depth sensing, but it doesn't really work. The 8Mp f / 2.2 front camera can also be used, but nothing special, the self-timer found that the background was blown up. For video calls, anything good enough can be found in our book, so it's here. Video recording can reach 4K UHD, but without any stable results, it is a bit unstable.

Verdict

Lack of NFC can make your phone malfunction, but if it doesn't matter to you, then the combination of a big screen, amazing battery life and a spot Android Oreo should be enough for you to think about whether you want to spend as little as possible on your smartphone.
