The Xperia XA1 is available for the first time. It is part of the same generation as Xperia XZ and Xperia XZ Premium, and it also has a brother called Xperia XA1 Ultra.

The XA1 is priced at $299/£229/$399, while the big brother with a six-inch screen costs £329 (about $420, $570). The price of XA1 fell, we saw it as low as £200/$280, and the 2GB trade started in the UK, at £15 a month.

The design is not for everyone, I hope I have a more attractive color model than a pure white version. The back of the phone is made of plastic; the sides are made of metal. The entire phone has a visible gap - the XA1 will be damaged in a short time, and the SIM card slot has white paint on it. This is not a good start, but it does survive under the seat on the pipe, which is impressive considering the amount of gravel found on the train floor.

All buttons are located on the right edge of the device, with a volume rocker, classic Xperia round power button and dedicated camera buttons. The latter allows you to take light and focus on reading, after which you can take a photo.

On the left is the SIM slot, which can hold up to 256GB of microSD card; this is a generous 32GB of memory. There is a 3.5 mm headphone jack on the top.

At the rear, the camera is hidden inside the back cover and has a protective metal ring around it to keep it away from the hoarse table and floor.

You will notice that I didn't mention the fingerprint scanner; that's because there isn't one. These days are very unusual, especially for mobile phones that spend this amount. I have seen scanners on mobile phones cheaper to £100, so Sony does not include one that is disappointing.

The XA1's screen is a 1280 x 720 pixel event. At this point the screen snobbery will stop reading, but for the rest of us, this display is perfectly fine. Yes, the text is not so clear, high-resolution images may not look good, but your Facebook and Instagram feeds look good. However, the display cannot compete with the Moto G5's 5-inch, 1920 x 1080 resolution screen.

For everyday performances, this is great. I can read it in direct sunlight at maximum brightness, although at night I find that even the smallest brightness is sensitive to me, and the sleepy eyes are too bright.

The white is a little blue, and the viewing angle is quite narrow; however, again, the color image is well represented and there are no outstanding problems.

In terms of audio, the down speakers are nothing but mediocrity. However, the microphone is a different story: it works well for background noise and picks up the sound you want to hear.

Sony Xperia XA1 - Camera

The Xperia XA1's 230,000-pixel f/2.0 camera is its most notable feature. However, the software built around it does affect the experience.

First of all, good. Sony is the undisputed king of smartphone camera sensors, and the Exmor brand chips included here are excellent. The images taken during the day are full of details and show very vivid colors.

The autofocus speed is very fast and there is a manual mode that gives you insight into the many settings. I prefer to have Superior Auto open, and in general, it does a good job. The only problem with advanced automation is that it does not let you manually turn on HDR (high dynamic range). This is very annoying.
