Gokyo Lakes - A Must-Visit on the Everest Base Camp Trek
The Everest Base Camp Trek is regarded as one of the most astounding treks in the Himalayan region of Nepal for all its beauty, magnificence and adventure. Add the unexplored marvels of the Gokyo Lakes region to it and what you get is an unbeatable adventure-the Everest Base Camp Trek with Gokyo Lakes!
The trek starts with the classic Everest Base Camp trek but takes a deviation to Gokyo RI and then to the Cho La Pass that is a high pass and finally joins back at the main Everest Base Camp Trek route.
Gokyo RI has a series of six high altitudes, beautiful turquoise blue lakes, a high pass and a beautiful trail that is less crowded than the usual trail. The trail promises the best of the entire Everest region. Gokyo RI is actually a summit at the Gokyo village that overlooks the two lakes and promises some of the best views. You can actually view two beautiful lakes, a glacier and also the Makalu, Everest, Lhotse and Cho Oyu, four of the highest summits in the region.
The ...
... Gokyo Lake Trek is about three days longer than the usual Everest Base Camp Trek and it is also a little more difficult than the EBC Trek as it involves trekking the Gokyo RI that is 17,575 ft; Chola Pass which is 17,500 ft and the Kala Patthar at 18,190 ft. So it would not be wrong to call this one an intense trek and one must come all prepared in terms of fitness for this trek.
What to expect while at the trek?
The 17-day long trek explores the little known Gokyo Village that is located in the valley of Khumbu region. You will also get a chance to visit the traditional villages besides passing by the most tranquil Gokyo lakes in the region-Gokyo Ri and the Fifth Lake. Trek the popular trail of Cho La Pass and then hike the popular black rock called the Kala Patthar. Also on the trek, enjoy some of the most spectacular views of the high peaks such as Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Pumari, and others. And last but certainly not the least, spend a day full of excitement and thrill at the Everest Base Camp and enjoy your victory.
For all those of you who have been wondering if you miss the attractions at the main Everest Base Camp Trek by taking the alternate route, the answer is a big NO! The Gokyo lake Trek joins back at the Cho La Pass which is before the base camp for Kala Patthar and the Everest Base Camp. So practically there is nothing that you are going to miss - from the Everest Base Camp to Khumbu Glacier, Climber’s stand, Kala Patthar, and then the trek down route is certainly from the classic EBC Trek itself.
Fitness levels for the Trek
The EBC Trek or the Gokyo Ri Trek is graded as a difficult trek which makes it necessary for the trekkers to qualify for a particular level of fitness. It requires both flexibility and strength. The trek requires about 7 to 8 hours of trekking a day, sleeping at altitudes that are about 15,000 ft or above. The trekkers need to trek altitude of 17,000 feet for about four times in this trek-the Gokyo RI Summit at 17, 575 ft; Chola Pass at 17,782 ft; the Everest Base Camp at 17,600 ft and the Kala Patthar at 18,513 ft. The high altitudes and long hours of trekking together make this trek a grueling task in itself.
