Once Damaged, Is It Effective To Get The Dentures Repaired?
Breaking your dentures can be a scary situation. Aside from being an essential tool for eating, they also play a huge part in how you present yourself to other people and the rest of the world. The first thing that comes to mind when this happens is “What should I do?” Can dentures still be repaired once it’s damaged? This short guide will answer these questions and help you handle your denture emergency with ease.
Common Reasons for Dentures to Break
• Normal wear and tear – If you’ve been using the same dentures for quite some time, they can break because of a few circumstances like applying too much pressure when chewing, changing temperatures and eating a lot of acidic food.
• Dropping them – Although dentures are made to be very durable, when you drop them and they land just right, they can break or crack.
• Improperly fitted or ill-fitting – Dentures are especially made and designedfor your own use. Over time, though, they can become too loose or too light because of changes in the shape of your mouth.
What to Do if Your Dentures Break
If you end up damaging ...
... your dentures, the first thing to do is to not panic and assure yourself that this can be fixed. Next, call your dentist’s office, let them know what happened and schedule a repair. In the meantime, you can wear your back-up pair of dentures. If you don’t have one, see if you can make a temporary repair to your broken set.
There are a few kinds of repairs, depending on which part of the denture is damaged. You can pick up an FDA-approved denture repair kit from most drug stores. These kits have a special glue that can reinforce a crack long enough until you can get to your dentist. They can also contain different shapes and sizes of teeth in case you need to replace one.
How to Avoid Damaging Your Dentures
• Handle your dentures with care. Make sure that they do not drop, and don’t bend the clasps or plastic. As an extra precaution, place a tower on the counter or fill your sink with water when cleaning or inserting your dentures.
• Rinse your dentures after eating to remove food particles trapped in its crevices.
• Brush your dentures daily using a soft-bristled brush. Do not use whitening toothpastes or other formulations that contain bleach.
• Soak your dentures overnight. Keeping them moist helps extend their lifespan. Check with your dentist for recommendations when it comes to night storage.
Repairing damaged dentures is not something that anyone can just do. You can make temporary repairs, but such fixes will not last very long. Never do anything that will damage your dentures because your dentist might still be able to repair them. For such kinds of emergencies, it is best to have a spare set. This way, you can immediately go on with your normal activities while getting your original set fixed.
