Preserving Trees With Right Pruning
Preserving Trees with Right Pruning
Plants big and small provide color, shade and fragrance to your landscape design, making it more inviting and relaxing. It is said in an article Tree Pruning Done Right, that to preserve the functional and aesthetic appeal of these woody plants, proper pruning techniques is extremely important.
Take a closer look at a tree in your garden. A tree has the natural ability to heal itself in the area that lies between the branch and the trunk. Thus, it is critical to make the cut just beyond the branch collar, leave that collar; it is where the tree heals itself. The branch collar is the visible swelling of the bark at the base of a branch. It has the ability to callus over the wound caused by a pruning cut, sealing out moisture, disease and insect penetration, thus cutting into and damaging the collar, or leaving too much branch, will leave the healing process ineffective.
If you are removing a heavy branch, you need to make 3 cuts to prevent the weight of the branch from tearing the bark through the branch collar: First, make a small score on the bottom of the branch about ...
... a foot or more from the trunk. Next, make a full cut just beyond the score to drop the branch, and lastly make a clean cut at the branch collar. Remember to leave the branch collar intact; it is where the healing process begins.
Removing suckers and water sprouts is another essential part of preserving your trees in your landscape design and construction. These offshoots can appear from the trunk, branches or root systems of trees. These can occur naturally or as a result of stress or damage to a tree, and they are often vertical, quickly growing and unsightly. Pruning them off as they crop up will not only keep the trees looking great, but also help in keeping the canopy from becoming overcrowded and allow for adequate light penetration.
Light pruning, trimming, removing of diseased or dead branches can be done anytime of the year, but the perfect time to do heavy pruning is actually in the late Fall and Winter when they are dormant. Staying proactive with pruning your trees will help keep your landscape design beautiful --gorgeous spring flowers, cool summer shade, and eye-catching fall colors around for years to come.
Trees are generally strong survivors on their own, but pruning when done right will keep them healthy and attractive making your perennial garden design awesome. So if you think your trees need trimming and pruning to maintain the beauty of your garden, perennial garden designers are just a call away.
