4 Things You Must See When In Curacao
Possessing a layered history and being located within close proximity to South America, Curacao has one of the most multifaceted cultures in the Caribbean. From relaxing at a beach to participating in water sports, there are a plethora of activities any traveler can enjoy, even if budget is a concern. Here’s a list of some of the sights you mustn’t miss when in Curacao:
• Queen Emma Pontoon Bridge
This is a magical floating bridge, otherwise known as ‘Swinging Old Lady’, located in Curacao’s capital city of Willemstad. It floats on water and opens every thirty minutes to allow boats to pass by. It is colorfully lit at night, offering plenty of photo opportunities.
• Willemstad
It is the largest city on the island country, one rich in both cultural and historical heritage. From edgy murals and groovy galleries to talented artisans, Willemstad has a lot for art lovers. Visit the Curacao Museum to view art collections produced by famous European painters. The Curacao Maritime Museum offers a glimpse of maritime history with nautical charts, ship models, and rare navigation equipment. The ...
... Fort Church Museum includes artifacts from the Dutch-Protestant churches and some of the oldest maps of Curacao. Visit the Picturesque Post Museum to see post stamp collections and the Numismatic Museum: they have a huge collection of coins and precious gems.
• Beaches
Curacao is home to almost 40 stunning beaches, with surf ranging from placid to wild. The sandy beaches, rocky cliffs, and beach bars are perfect for beach adventures and water sports. Curacao is snorkeling heaven, thanks to the hundreds of tropical fish and other marine animals. Most Curacao snorkeling and diving areas are easily accessible from beaches—some of them are free. Stick to the left side of the bay for good underwater visibility. This is because the wave and wind direction are usually from left to right, so sand from the beach makes the view indistinct. There are plenty of other activities as well: kayaking, sailing, and jet-skiing to name a few. The best Curacao snorkeling spots are Playa Piskado, Little Knip Beach, and Tugboat Beach.
• Christoffel National Park
It is the largest national park, one with a rich variety of flora and fauna. It is a must-visit place for nature lovers. Visitors can tour the park through two scenic routes: (1) the northern route offers scenic views over the coast, hikes to the beaches, safaris, bird watching, and caves, while (2) the mountain route winds through the landscape of the southern half of the park. You could also head to Westpunt to view the most beautiful natural landscape.
