If you haven’t heard about Jarrah, it’s time to open your eyes to this wonderful material. Jarrah is a unique Australian hardwood that is renowned for its strength, durability, and versatility. It’s used in a wide variety of exterior and interior applications, including Jarrah furniture for your home. Let’s take a closer look at what Jarrah is and why you should choose it when you furnish your home.

Where Does Jarrah Come From?

Jarrah trees are grown in the South West corner of Western Australia from Perth down to Albany. They grow slowly in rich plains of aluminium and iron, and their roots are incredibly long in order to find the necessary water and nutrient to sustain them. A typical Jarrah tree has a long straight trunk that can reach 40 metres tall and it has a 2 metre diameter. This length and breadth of hardwood create an environment where wonderful grain textures and colours can form naturally. The colours within the wood can vary a great deal from a subtle blonde to a deep luscious red. The Jarrah tree will not germinate from a seed; they are started by ligna tubers, these are underground swellings ...
... that store the required nutrients and energy for slow growth. This means that after a bushfire younger Jarrah trees can still regenerate and grow as normal. The bark of the Jarrah tree is extremely fibrous giving the whole tree a tough exterior.

Why is Jarrah Timber Furniture Attractive?

As we mentioned above, Jarrah timber is strong and versatile, and it comes in a variety of beautiful colours. In fact, the colours quite accurately reflect the surround Western Australian landscape. If you use Jarrah sapwood, you will get a colour range of a paler yellow through to a deep orange. If you use Jarrah heartwood, the colours go from a rich red through to a more subtle brown hue. Jarrah timber has a moderately coarse texture and an even grain with some slight interlocking patina. This creates a figure known as a “fiddle back,” and this is why it is so appealing for architects and furniture designers.

The Natural Properties of Jarrah

The timber from a Jarrah hardwood tree also has a number of other natural properties that are attractive for furniture makers. The timber is resistant to termites, marine borers and rot so that it will endure for a long time. Jarrah wood is very resistant to the effects of weather, and it’s extremely high density makes it tough enough to be used in applications, such as general house framing, bridge construction, railway sleepers, marine wharves, flooring, and furniture. Because Jarrah has such an interesting grain and colour range, it has been used in joinery, parquetry and furniture design for many years. Jarrah timber furniture is an aesthetically pleasing and durable choice that you can enjoy for years to come.
