Ipc J-std-001 Training Cost?
Total Articles: 8
One of the most common questions we hear from the electronics industry as a training center is “how much does IPC-J-STD-001 training cost”? The answer hinges upon several variables which determine the per person training cost. The variables driving the answer to the “how much does IPC-J-STD-001 cost” question are the level of certification required, the number of students in the classroom and the location of the class being certified in the J-STD-001 program.
The IPC certification program, including the assembly hand soldering standard the IPC-J-STD-001, is a multi-tiered certification program. At the uppermost level is the MIT or master level, the next level down is the certified instructor trainer followed by the CIS level. Master instructors are employed by the licensed training center and serve as the subject matter experts teaching soldering skills. Usually, these instructors come from a deep and varied industry experience or have taught in the military. These master instructors in turn train trainers. These trainers or CITs, in turn, instruct operators in hand soldering skills and how to interpret and navigate the J-STD-001 “Requirements for Soldered Electrical and Electronic Assemblies” specification. At the operator or CIS level of certification, after having passed the mandatory modules, the student may take one or more optional modules. The optional modules of instruction at the J-STD-001 instruction level are wires and terminals, through-hole, SMT and inspection. Each one of these additional modules is slated for approximately 8 hours of classroom hands-on soldering time. Whereas the CIT level always consumes 5 days of instruction, the CIS level consumes anywhere from one to five days of instruction depending upon the number of optional modules being taught. The number of instruction days, therefore, drives the price for the IPC-J-STD-001 certification training cost.
The number of students in the classroom also drives the cost of the per-student IPC-J-STD-001 certification training cost. For example, some electronic manufacturing or repair firms will hire a solder training and certification company to train their employees. If the CIS training for all modules, both required and optional, is desired, then if (10) students versus (4) are trained in this period of time, the cost per student reflects this number of student differential. Comparatively, if a CIT certification training is completed at a regularly-scheduled class time, then the cost per student is the same no matter how many students show up for training. Single students mixed in together with other non-company employees is typically charged a per-student fixed cost of around $1,000. Therefore, the cost of the IPC-J-STD-001 certification varies based on the number of students as well as the previously-described type of training program.
Finally, the location of the training has an impact on the IPCJ-STD-001 certification training cost. This is especially the case with the IPC J-STD-001 training program as equipment and their associated transportation make a difference. In the case where the classroom instruction is being done at a location that is already been outfitted with a soldering classroom, then the costs with respect to equipment and transport of same are well-known. In other cases where the classroom materials and equipment for the J-STD-001 certification training must be brought to the customer training location, the cost is higher. Equipment in terms of soldering irons, microscopes, hand tools, training boards, flux, solder, and components must all be shipped or transported to the location. These transportation and shipping charges all lead to higher J-STD-001 certification costs.
The level of IPC-J-STD-001 certification training, the number of students requiring the training and the location of the training all have an impact on outsourced IPC J-STD-001 training cost per student.
