In order to successfully end up with a high quality poster that you can proudly display for your business, you’ll need to not only focus on the artistic design or it, but also on the printing process of it too. For companies who have designers as their staff members or are able to outsource that to freelance artists, the design aspect is not a problem. But when it comes to large format printing, trouble can be experienced if you haven’t adequately prepared for it. This can result in delays or even additional money spent on what should be a straightforward task. So to minimise that likelihood, here are some steps you can take to prepare your design for large format printing:

Colours Used

If you have dealt with graphics before, you’ll notice that a lot of editing software gives you the option of designing with either RGB or CMYK colour options. Bear in mind, if you are designing for the purposes of printing, you’ll want to use CMYK instead since RGB is more suited for colour channels on digital screens and websites.

Image Sharpness And Resolution

Another crucial element you’ll need to consider is image sharpness and resolution. After all, you want the final result that comes out of the large format and banner printing process to be clear enough to read without straining your eyes. Your poster should be easy to notice and read even from a distance. The same applies for other products too, like banner printing. You want your banners to be sharp and clear enough for others to notice.

Make sure the canvas dimensions are prepared accurately before everything else. If you are unsure what sizing you’re supposed to be using, you can always research into common poster sizes or speak with your outsourced printing company for more advice. After which, check the image resolution option and make sure that the resolution (dpi) is selected accordingly. When it comes to large format printing, it’s often enough just to use 150 dpi. However, please also note that 150 dpi is the minimum requirement. If you are able to, it’s always best to go higher and set is as 300 dpi. It’s inadvisable to go anywhere lower than 150 dpi.

Once those specifications are made, take the time to zoom into your poster design graphics and pay attention to each of your design elements. This is especially important for distinctive things like text or your logo. To get a more accurate reading, you can zoom in somewhere between 65% to 69% to gauge how your large format printing will turn out.

File Saving

Save your images as the original graphic editing file- most outsourced printing companies who offer large format printing like Kiasu Print ask for files either in PSD or AI format. This is likely due to being able to make any necessary editing or retain an original copy in events of anything occurring during the print process.

Take the time to also consult your team or outsourced printing company about the finishing options that you can use for your poster design too. For example, do you want the poster to be mounted? Do you need laminating or display stands? And there you have it. With these guidelines in mind, you should be able to have an easier time preparing your poster design for large format printing.
