An Overview Of The Smsts Course
SMSTS courses are run by Training Providers, which are approved by the CITB (Construction Industry Training Board) and it is possible to take a full five day course or a refresher 2 day version if you have already completed the main course.
The main SMSTS course covers a wide variety of health and safety aspects; this is why it is spread over five days as there is a lot to learn. If candidates don't complete the full five days, they will not be passed and will not receive their certificate at the end of it which chronicles this achievement. As some course locations may be quite far from a candidates home, it is important that they arrange someone to cover for them at work and a hotel or place to stay to ensure they can complete all five days.
Delving deeper into what the SMSTS course actually covers, let's first look at who it is aimed at. As well as site managers, the course is aimed at a variety of different professions within the construction sector, including project directors, quantity surveyors and site agents. It may also be useful for anybody who is training to develop upon their current role and move ...
... into a higher level of management.
The course itself covers not only current health and safety legal requirements, but the moral and ethical responsibilities of undertaking such a role. With people's lives in your hands, being fully aware of the responsibility you hold is very important. The individual elements of the course include:
Legal regulations pertaining to the Health & Safety at Work Act and other regulations and codes of practice, which are relevant to managing the safety of a construction site.
Construction Design Management Regulations (CDM)
Setting up a construction site
Risk assessments
Method statements
Working at height on items such as scaffolding, including the correct way to set scaffolding up to minimise risk of injury
Why control measures are needed in such workplaces
How to maintain communications and ensure health and safety is kept at a maximum at all times.
Legislation and requirements that relate when an accident does occurs onsite.
As mentioned previously, candidates who have successfully completed the SMSTS course can take a 2 day refresher. This includes:
Any new regulations and updates associated with the Health & Safety at Work Act, CDM and within the industry itself
Statistics relating to the amount of accidents within the construction sector, costs, causes and how these could have been prevented.
Responsibilities of being in a managerial position
How to motivate one's workforce to encourage improved safety for themselves and their colleagues
Advice on performing site inductions
Anyone looking to undertake an SMSTS course should talk with their employer beforehand, as they may be able to reimburse the individual as long as the information gained from the course will benefit the firm in the long run.
