Jorvik Viking Centre
Located in the beautiful, historic city of York, Jorvik Viking Centre has been open for almost 35 years and has become a staple attraction for tourists from across the world. An archaeological dig starting in 1972 led to the discovery of York’s importance to Viking settlers in England. It was an enormous trading post, and archaeologists unearthed a vast hoard of interesting artefacts and information that led to the opening of Jorvik as a means to impart this knowledge to the general public. There are plenty of family activities Yorkshire to do at Jorvik, including a ride experience that allows you to be transported back to AD960. Viking history is something that’s often covered in schools too, so family days out in Yorkshire here could really help to solidify a child’s knowledge or interest in the topic.
National Coal Mining Museum
Taking a leap forward in history, the National Coal Mining Museum allows visitors to travel 140 metres underground to explore the last deep coalmine in England. The experience will allow you to learn more about the industry that helped to shape England today, as well as provide a way of life for many people across the country, especially in Yorkshire. Whilst the industry has seemingly come to an end, it is still an incredibly valuable part of British culture that should be remembered. There are also a variety of events on at the museum, as well as being able to talk to a miner, making it one of the most fascinating tourist attractions in Yorkshire.
Royal Armouries Museum
History is full of warfare, some of which involved brutal weapons and methods of killing an enemy. The Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds is home to one of the most extensive collections of historical arms and armour in the world. Featuring a collection spanning not just a huge range of historical eras, but also locations, it is truly staggering to visit the museum and see everything that is on display. If you’re planning family days out in Yorkshire, this museum should definitely be on the list! There is also a daily schedule of events and family activities Yorkshire at the museum, including live combat demonstrations, dramatic performances and handling sessions. Combine this with the seasonal events and exhibitions that occur throughout the year, and you will find that each time you come back you can have a different experience.
