Dan Marino was a great NFL player. Dan Marino's record-breaking legacy begins as he completes 362 of 564 passes for 5,084 yards and 48 touchdowns, setting NFL records for completions, yards and TD's in a season. In the playoffs, the Miami Dolphins whipped the Seattle Seahawks, then thy go on to upset the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Championship, with Dan throwing for nearly 430 yards and four touchdown passes. In Super Bowl XIX, they fall to the San Francisco 49ers, 38 to 16. Marino was selected for the Pro Bowl that year. Marino had a unique ability to read the defenses quickly before setting up to throw and his skill of quickly releasing the ball made it very difficult for defenders to sack him.

Dan Marino is well known as a professional football player and quarterback for the Miami Dolphins of the National Football League. Even as a young man, Dan was a really good athlete. He stared as a quarterback for the Vikings of Pittsburgh's Central Catholic High School. By his senior year, 1978, he is selected to the Parade High School All America team. He was recruited to play football by numerous major universities. The Kansas City Royals of Major League Baseball drafted him. Ultimately he chooses to stay near home and attend the University of Pittsburgh.

For the Pittsburgh Panthers, Dan foreshadows his NFL achievements by setting NCAA season and career records for attempts and completions, yardage, and touchdowns. He earns All-American honors his junior year. The university retired Dan's jersey in 1982, after his senior season.

Back in his home neighborhood, Dan's grade school football field is renamed Dan Marino Field and his high school honors him as well by retiring his jersey number.
