When You Stop Making Excuses You'll Start Losing Weight

It's easy to make excuses for being overweight. One day you look in the mirror and see a distressing version of the Michelin Tire Man looking back at you. Where once you might have been lean and mean you now find that your gut hangs over your belt like a deployed airbag and your rear end has become an overfilled waterbed mattress that rolls in and out like the tide. At this point it's easy to mutter to yourself, "This can't all be my fault, can it?"

Oh, but it can and most certainly is.

It's normally quite hard to pin point the exact time that our healthy and fit bodies and active lifestyles made a hard left turn at love handle parkway followed by a slight right at sedentary road. We all know that six pack abs don't turn into beer keg bellies overnight, but doesn't it seem just like yesterday that putting on our swimwear didn't require a month of fasting and early morning workouts?

So it's time to stop making excuses about those extra pounds and face the cold, hard reality of what we have gotten ourselves into. Only when we do that will we be able to come up with a pragmatic and honest plan to lose weight ...
... and get healthy.

You say you have a rare condition that leads to weight gain; I say that your rare condition is living next to one of the few remaining Krispy Kreme Donut outlets with a convenient 24-hour drive through window. Just drive right past the donuts and I think that your rare condition will be cured in a hurry.

You tell me you're "big boned"; I say that unless you are a very popular South Park cartoon character or have some missing link Brachiosaurus DNA somewhere in those hips the only thing that's big about you is your gift for downing $1 double cheeseburgers in the McDonald's parking lot at lunch time. As above, skip the fast food run and you'll find that your body has the potential for being the posted child for a spiffy, new BMI chart.

You say that you hate going to the gym; I say if you really hate the gym, don't go. You can work out effectively at home and save a lot of money. If you decide that you are going to go to the gym get into the right mind set and stop driving mind-numbing circles around the parking lot until the parking space right next to the entrance opens up. And, once you get in there, try to actually get a good workout. If you spend an hour watching TV from a treadmill going so slowly it makes the revolving restaurant at the top of the Seattle Space Needle seem like a demonic roller coaster ride hopped up on Jolt Cola then you really shouldn't bother going to the gym at all.

You say that when you do any exercise you get all hot and sweaty and maybe even develop rashes! I say, hey, that same thing happens to me when I sit the wrong way on my wallet for too long. Get over it. You know you get just as hot and sweaty running after the ice cream truck or reaching deep under your car seat while driving trying to find the french fry that got away.

Remember, it's always OK to say to yourself I eat too much and don't exercise enough. When you stop making excuses for gaining weight you'll be ready to start making real progress in losing it.
