Brendan Shanahan has had an incredible career in NHL Hockey. Over the years he has proven that he is one of the best to ever play the game, and he also is a definite candidate for the Hall of Fame. Brendan Shanahan was born in 1969 in Mimico, Ontario. He started off his hockey playing days in the junior hockey league (OHL) and there he learned important lessons about the games itself and also about leadership. These are skills we would continue to improve and embellish on throughout his career. When he was 18 he was entered into the 1987 draft as the second overall pick and was chosen by the New Jersey Devils. Shanahan had made such a name for himself before the draft that he already had very high expectations to go in and become an integral part of the team, and he did just that.

Only his second year into his contract with the Devils, Shanahan scored 51 goals in the season. After four seasons he was traded to the St. Louis Blues where he made a name for himself and became one of the fan favorites. 1995 rolled around and Shanahan was shocked to find out he was being traded to the ailing Hartford Whalers. After ...
... only year with the team (and 44 goals) he asked to be traded again. By this time, Brendan had already established himself as one of the premier players in the league and it definitely opened up his options on choosing a team.

This situation offered an ideal opportunity for the Detroit Red Wings who had been making some strategic moves to open up spots for talented players. Shanahan signed with the Red Wings and it was history in the making. In 1997 the Red Wings, with the help of Shanahan, obtained the Stanley Cup for the first time in over four decades. They swept the Flyers in the championship and then repeated the very next year as they swept the Washington Capitals. Brendan played the best hockey of his life during these years and even passed the 500 goal mark in the 2001-2002 season.

Shanahan helped the Red Wings to three Stanley Cups while he was in Detroit until in 2006 he went and signed a year-long contract of the Rangers in New York. Halfway through his first season with the Rangers, Brendan was sent to the hospital after a collision with one of the Philadelphia Flyers players. He eventually returned to the ice and still put up numbers but it was apparent the Brendan Shanahan's career was beginning to wind down. He only scored 23 goals in the 2007-2008 season and that summer the Rangers decided to cut Brendan loose.

He eventually signed on as a free agent with the New Jersey Devils again but that deal was short lived and he ended up opting for retirement. Shanahan also was able to represent his country in a few different championships including the World Cup and also the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, UT.
