Looking After Your Eyes
Near-sightedness or myopia is becoming more prevalent across the globe. Many people believe there is a correlation between the rise in computer usage and the increased incidents of myopia, however there is actually no real proof to substantiate this claim.
Many people fear losing their eyesight over losing any other ''sense''. It''s not as if any of us want to go deaf or lose our sense of taste and smell either but going blind is usually a bigger worry for most people. However, there are ways you can protect your eyesight.
Wear sunglasses whenever it is bright outside. This doesn''t just include a sunny summer''s day. The sun does shine all year round, even though in England we sometimes forget this. Even overcast days can damage your eyes with powerful UV rays.
Don''t just pick up the cheapest pair in the shop however. Check that they conform to European safety standards and display the CE mark which means the glasses will protect you from harmful ultra violet rays.
Don''t just sit in front of a screen all day. Give yourself regular ''screen breaks'' which allow your eyes to focus on something else, ...
... preferably something in the distance out the window. This should help to prevent double vision, headaches, eyestrain and soreness.
The old wives''s tale about carrots helping you see in the dark may not be true but your diet does affect your eyesight. Foods such as mango, squash, broccoli, green beans and spinach are rich in lutein and zeaxanthin that helps reduce the risk of contracting cataracts and age-related macular degeneration.
If your family has a history of eyes diseases such as cataracts and glaucoma, consult an optician. Early detection can lead to treatment that is not too invasive. What''s more you should get your eyes checked regularly whether you already wear glasses and or contacts or not, just to keep abreast of any changes in vision quality and monitor your general eye health.
Your contact lens cleaning routine should be impeccable. Make sure you only use proper solution to clean your lenses and never use tap water or saliva. Don''t borrow anyone else''s lenses and only sleep in them if directed to by you optometrist. If you don''t stick to a rigid cleaning routine you can risk infection, corneal disease or even, in the worst case scenario, the loss of an eye. Bonny Kominek has been using contact lenses for about 11 years now and got his contact lenses online from Vision Direct.
