Poonam Dhillon won the title of Miss India in 1977, when she was only 16 years old. She was called 'Young Miss India'. However, she started her filmy career from Yash Chopra's film "Trishul". She gave flawless presentation in the song "Gapoochi Gapoochi gum gum". Captivated by her performance, Yash Chopra signed her as a lead character in his film "Noori", which was a big hit on Box Office and nominated her in Filmfare in Best Actress category. She also took place as an upcoming heroine of late seventies and early nineties.

She had also performed in other multi-starrers like "Karma" and "Batwara". Even after her marriage with Ashok Thakeria, she never quitted her profession like other actresses.

She has a long filmy career of 10 years and worked in several genres but as a common woman, she caricatures the modern active woman of India, who has all attributes to live according to her own will.
