A Wireless World
As more and more of us use our mobile phones for browsing the internet, sending emails and downloading music, the specific network is becoming the most important deciding factor when buying a new mobile phone. Most smartphone''s have very similar specifications and although speed, memory size and camera quality vary slightly, generally it comes down to design when picking a handset.
But now that almost every handset is available on all five UK networks choices are made depending on network coverage and price. According to an independent survey commissioned by O2, the fastest mobile broad of any of the five UK networks comes from Vodafone.
Over 10 million UK citizens use mobile broadband in a typical week and almost an hour a day is spent browsing the internet from a mobile phone. It seems we are now using email and the internet''s social networking sites to keep in touch with friends, family and colleagues as opposed to just calling.
According to the iconic BT advert of the 1990s it was ''good to talk''. But thanks to mobile broadband, we now talk without speaking. 80% of mobile internet users admit that ...
... due to the internet they keep in contact with friends and family more frequently. It seems ironic that we have a mobile phone, but more of us prefer to talk through typing.
In the UK, over 50% of all UK mobile phone users claim their mobiles aren''t just for verbal communication. Almost a third admit that they now communicate using social networking sites such as Facebook. What with mobile broadband usage now at 72% talking without saying a word is going to increase.
There are two kinds of mobile broadband. One uses a USB and the other a mobile handset with internet capability. Mobile broadband via your laptop can be split again into two main types; a monthly contract or pay as you go, however both work by inserting a USB modem into the USB port on your laptop.
The other option is to use your mobile phone that has internet capability as your modem for your laptop. This can also be arranged on a pay as you go basis or a monthly contract, depending on your usage. This option is particularly useful if you mostly use your phone as your internet browser but sometimes need the extras that come with a laptop or PC.
As we develop into a completely wireless world mobile broadband will become the only type of internet connection. For casual usage, mobile phones are now posing competition for desktop computers but they can''t completely replace them so combining mobile and computer usage into one broadband package looks to be the future of mobile broadband. Bonny Kominek suggest Vodafones mobile broadband if you are on the move. You can now take your office with you.
