The Smartphone That Is Environmentally Smart: The Samsung Blue Earth

In February, Samsung revealed the first solar powered touch-screen Smartphone made of recycled plastic water bottles. Not only is the phone and its charger made from recycled materials, but it has a solar panel in the back of the handset cutting down the time you will need to actually plug the phone in to an outlet to charge. Even the packaging for the phone is made of recycled paper; just in case you were wondering. There are tons of articles about the phone on the internet, but I was interested in noting who will use this phone and the reactions of consumers to this new product.
According to Samsung, this phone is the real deal in eco-friendly innovation. They hecave thought of everything from the emissions used in the manufacturing process to the removal of harmful substances used in the materials that make up other phones.
So who does this phone appeal to? Well, obviously the people who are really into being “greenâ€Â, but I actually think the phone is pretty stylish and if you want to be more green, this phone shows you how. Therefore, this phone could be helpful to people who want ...
... to change their environmentally conscious ways, but don’t know how.
The interface on the phone helps you be more eco-friendly and has a built-in pedometer to help you calculate the emissions you are saving by walking to your destination. The value of your footprint is calculated through the number of trees that have been saved. Features like this have also been seen in eco-friendly cars. It motivates a user to try and reach a goal in being environmentally responsible.
Most of the reaction I have read has been positive. Some consumers are hoping that more mobile phone manufactures follow Samsung’s lead. There are some skeptics that say comments like “Your phone is usually in your pocket†and while that is true, I feel every bit helps and the phone does not have to be in direct sunlight to charge. There are times when it won’t be in your pocket and you’ll be happy at how conveniently your phone is charged as you go grab a cup of coffee or take your dog for a walk.
As for me, I am actually excited that there is a product that is truly eco-friendly and the aesthetics were not sacrificed. Here is the big question, how much does it cost? Well, I hate to disappoint you, but I can’t seem to find that information anywhere. I have a feeling it will be more expensive than other smart phones since they did not release that important tidbit of information; most green products tend to be pricier. The other reason could be that Samsung wants to screen consumer reaction in order to allot a balance between price and the value given by the consumer.
