There are a lot of products used every day in restaurants that are taken for granted by those enjoying their meals, but invaluable to the chefs and workers behind the scenes. Items of commercial catering equipment such as table linen, utensils and plates only scratch the surface in exploring the range of items that are needed, and that's only thinking about what the consumer needs to eat in comfort. When you think about the equipment used by the chefs, waiters and bar staff, to name three workers in a dining area, the amount of catering products used on a daily basis is staggering.

The chef, for example, has several needs that need to be taken into account. The clothing he or she wears is a big one; it is very important that those who work with food wear clothing that is comfortable and easy to discard quickly. Their footwear must be durable with non-slip tread, and it is important that protective gear such as aprons and hats is also used, to help prevent against accidents and spillages.

The knife set a chef uses is also a very important consideration - many chefs prefer a specific make or type of knife and will ...
... often insist they have this type to hand when cooking. Some chefs do take their own set when they start a new job, but of course any restaurant or diner must provide these should they need to be used. Knives for jobs such as cutting bread, cheese and meat are important, as well as those for specialist dishes such as oriental food.

Other important utensils used by a chef include can openers, funnels, timers, cheese graters, whisks and tongs. Utensils are a very important aspect of commercial catering equipment and care must be taken to ensure any bought are of high quality and standards.

A chef also need a good set of pots and pans to ensure the meals they produce are of the highest standards - again, there is a wide range available in just this category. From non-stick to copper, stainless steel to cast iron, where does one start when choosing what to buy? And then of course, objects such as steamers, moulds and toasters need to be thought about - a good restaurant will have everything to hand in a moment should the need arise for a certain meal or dish to be cooked. Baking pans and trays are also important; a lot of meals require some time in an oven and it is important that they are cooked properly.

The preparation process of foods before cooking must also be thought about - mixing bowls, wooden spoons and colanders are just three examples. Some raw foods can be pretty dangerous if consumed before cooking, so care must be taken that they are not mixed together. Coloured coded chopping boards are used for this purpose; a different colour per ingredient used on them.

There is such a lot of choice available in the commercial catering equipment market that it is impossible to list them all at once. Anyone looking to buy items for their restaurant or diner should be well aware of what kind of products they will need, especially if they have a large establishment and will need multiples of some items of commercial catering equipment.
