It's a Monday morning, I'm standing on the station platform waiting for a train to roll into view through the murky morning light. It's not a good start to the week either. On top of the usual dread of returning to the daily rat race after a stress-busting, fun-filled weekend, the heavens have decided to commence emptying their contents on my head. To make matters worse, my umbrella is still sitting in the hall at home and my regular train has been carted off to the depot to be fixed. Bob Geldof's words are ringing in my ears.

Finally I hear a horn from the advancing train and it's front lights pierce the gloom. A man with an umbrella appears next to me, obviously deciding I had picked the exact place on the platform where the train door will stop to let us on. He catches my eye and mutters "Morning" with a wry smile on his face, not surprising as I look like someone has emptied a bucket over my head. I manage to raise a smirk in his direction as if I'm obliged to reply in some form.

The train finally stops and we both shuffle three feet towards the door. "Nearly got it right" I think to myself. The man graciously ...
... lets me on first and I burst through the opening into the rain-free cattle carriage. Then the race is on. Scanning my vicinity for a vacant seat, surely there must be one. I spot one, and race towards it. Brushing past commuters engrossed in their daily papers, cursing me under their breath. I get there first and plonk myself down, apologising to the woman next to me who I have just inadvertently drenched. She also mutters something like "No problem" but I can tell it is.

I look around to see who I am sharing the next 30 minutes with and see the usual mix of folk. City types reading the news, some people fast asleep, others peering out the window. Then I notice her. How could I have missed her? Directly opposite me and the only person showing any kind of humanity in my direction. A vision of beauty, looking as if she was teleported onto the train to avoid all contact with the elements. I raise my eyebrows apologetically in her direction and she smiles back. Every hair on my body stands on end. Did that just happen? Did she smile at me? Surely not. I move my gaze from her, looking out the window, almost afraid to catch her eye in case I melt on the spot. "I know", I think to myself, "I'll pretend to fall asleep and shut my eyes, perfect!"

It seems like an aeon for the trip to pass, my fake stupor finally disturbed by the monotone recorded voice announcing the trains termination and the stampede of people reaching for their coats and bags from the luggage racks. I open my eyes slowly, hoping it wasn't a dream, and am not disappointed. She smiles at me again as she gracefully rises to her feet to join the herd. "Monday morning hey? It can only get better, have a nice day". Like a bumbling fool I go to reply but my mind is blank, wiped by her stunning looks. I mutter "Yeah, you too". Nice one, that really wowed her! She smiles again and leaves the train.

Damn, just my luck, I've fallen in love with a stranger who I may never see again. Does she feel the same? How am I ever going to know or get in contact with her again? Will I stop asking myself questions and do something about it?! Well I have.
