Usually high performance is associated with heat. If the performance was great you will say the performance was hot. And if the performance was not good, one says the performance was cold and unexciting. When we need to run fast, first we do warm up exercises and once the body is warmed up it can deliver a great performance.

Similarly a car if it is not working we say it is out cold. In the early days it used to be difficult to get a car started on a cold morning. Therefore one can start to think that heat is good for performance and cold is not good. But that is not true. And the fact that a cold air intake improves the performance of your car is testimony to that.

To understand how it does that one needs to remember another fact that we know well. That a better supply of oxygen will lead to better combustion. When we light coals we need to fan them so that they get a lot of fresh air and when we fan them we can see visibly they burn brighter as the combustion intensifies.

Now we can't fan oxygen to the inside of the engine cylinder where the fuel is combusted. So how do we get more oxygen in there? We ...
... get more oxygen in there by reducing the temperature of the air in the air fuel mixture. Since cold air is dense it contains more oxygen for a given volume than hot air. And cold air intakes carry cold air directly to the engine so that it remains cool when it reaches the engine.

Better fuel combustion has very direct and obvious benefits to your car ownership experience. You waste lesser fuel therefore you get more mileage. More fuel is combusted per engine cycle so you get more power. And since the combustion is more efficient a lesser quantity of exhaust gases which are harmful are created. Therefore a car with a cold air intake is more environmentally friendly. As you can see a cold air intake is a cool product that gives you more than one benefit.
