Reminder: Google’s Main Focus Is Search!

It seems that with all the hoopla of Google’s latest ventures (i.e. Google Buzz, Google Wave, and the various other new application and updates) we tend to forget what Google’s focal point is… SEARCH! But with all the extra add-ons and applications I don’t think Google has forgotten its strongest seller and are still trying to gain new users and retain the old ones by maintaining a major focus on search.
Not too long ago Google enlarged the size of the search box on their homepage. Soon after, they cleared all additional information (anything that wasn’t the search box or the logo) from the homepage and have all additional links on the page appear after about a two second delay.
I recently noticed that now, it seems that the information doesn’t appear until you move your mouse across the page.
Another thing that Google implemented within the last few months with their search is the suggestive searches that work like predictive text to help you quickly find what you are looking for.
Google has also implemented ...
... some new features into its search results! They added a real-time feature to results by having Tweets and breaking news show up in a scrolling box based on a search query.
More recently, Google got creative with their music queries by having a play option on the top of the search results that allow us to hear if the song you’re looking for is really what you were trying to find.
Even this week, Google is testing out Trending Topics on their Google News section, which is similar, if not the exact same, as Twitter’s extremely popular Trending Topics; being sure to stay in stride with all popular forms of search.
These ingenious little tweaks make it seem like Google is reading our minds, but let’s not forget that Google has tons of data that no one else could possibly have.
John Gruber author of the blog Daring Fireball recently posted a short blog related to Google Search that gives you an idea on the kinds of data that Google has. He states:
“ReadWriteWeb has a weblog post that ranks highly in Google’s search results for ‘Facebook login’. The comments on the post are filled with complaints from confused people who think that this is the new Facebook login page… it’s a fascinating glimpse at just how confused many people are about how web sites and browsers work. They don’t use bookmarks, they don’t type ‘facebook.com’ in the location field. They just Google for whatever they’re looking…â€Â
This shows just how dominant, how ubiquitous Google is. It also shows the kind of information Google is collecting to tailor their services and be even more user-friendly! Search is not going anywhere, but it is definitely evolving in its everlasting effort to remain the #1 platform on the web for as far as the eye can see.
