Search Engine Optimization is much more than a campaign; campaign implies finality and SEO is just not / never finite. Rather, SEO is a never-ending marathon of online competition.

Let’s define Successful SEO †processes that result in significant rankings (Page 1-3 on Google) for targeted keywords with steadily increasing traffic from all organic sources including search engines, referral sites and the social media. In addition, Successful SEO results in maximized conversion rates based on onsite design elements that establish clear calls to action often including a well designed conversion funnel.

So, when considering “how,” we have now established what success actually looks like. With this in mind, the following should serve as a quality outline of exactly how to execute successful SEO.

The Basics

1. Extensive Keyword Research †do not skip this by thinking that you know all of your keywords … you don’t … I guarantee it! There are many tools available to research keywords … ...
... just Google it. Google Keyword Tool and Word Tracker are 2 of the most popular. The purpose of keyword research is to fully develop your keyword universe; with rare exception this will result in hundreds of keywords / phrases that are relevant for the products and services you offer. By researching the stats, you can determine which keywords are the most popular amongst searchers. You will also need to research your top competitors who already on page 1 … they are not on page 1 by accident … they are doing the right things and you can learn a great deal by researching their websites.
2. Onsite SEO †this is basic but essential stuff. Alone, onsite SEO will not result in significant results … however, without well executed onsite SEO, you will not stand a chance of significant rankings for your targeted keywords. Some of the most important pieces of onsite SEO are:
1. URL selection †obviously for a new web site, try to choose a URL domain name that includes your best keyword and make sure you use a dotcom domain. However, do not choose a very long domain name just to include the keywords in your domain.
2. Titles: It is important to remember to use your most relevant keywords in your website pages. Search engine spiders will ‘crawl’ the title of each page first, so title tags are very important to get right.
3. Meta description: Meta descriptions are surely important; they need to be “efficiently descriptive” to tell the spiders precisely what the page is all about using targeted and economical use of words.
4. Content: Many people overlook the value of content on their website as it relates to SEO. Be sure to create unique content for your entire site, first focusing on your main page and the introductions. This content should include your keywords, but be careful not to overuse them †search engines don’t ‘like’ keyword stuffing. Write for people, not for search engines. With well written content, the SEO will take care of itself.
5. Blogs: Google Spiders love to crawl and index recently updated information and blogs are an efficient and expedient way to create fresh content for the spiders. Set up a blog and faithfully post to it as often as possible. Be sure the content is fresh and relevant to your readers.
6. Analytics: Analytic software is the best way to monitor the traffic your site receives. Use it to track where your visitors come from, how they found you and what they do once they arrive at your site. This information can then be utilized to tweak your SEO campaign appropriately.
7. Monitor: When you first begin your campaign, your site is not likely to rank very high, but the longer you work at it, the higher your rankings should be. Be sure to check your rankings on a regular basis †preferably daily.
3. SEO Friendly Website Design †aside from the above, you must concentrate on SEO Friendly design; there are many factors. For starters, avoid Flash as the basic design basis; stick to readable / crawlable HTML text. You can use one or two flash elements to promote human interaction with the site, however, Flash and other design programming language that is not readable by the search engines must be avoided.

Off-site Optimization

Offsite SEO chiefly involves the syndication of relevant content for the generation of “Backlinks.” Backlinks are one way links coming from outside of the site being optimize directly into that site. Content syndication is a powerful method for the generation of the best Backlinks; highly relevant, naturally occurring Backlinks. These backlinks are very important to the search engines and greatly influence the ultimate ranking you see on the first page of Google when you are searching a particular keyword. Remember, keywords being text entries, generally generate rankings based on data generated by textual content, both onsite and offsite. As with all media, content is the most important factor in Search Engine Marketing. It is relevant content that is the fuel that drives search engine rankings. Since online competition is as fierce or more online, it is logical to understand that the best content, the most content and the most continuous stream of content go a long way towards success in being found online and that is what SEO is ultimately all about.

Bear in mind that onsite and offsite SEO involve dozens of specialties and sub-specialties that this article merely summarizes. If you seek to compete for top rankings, and who wouldn’t, you must seriously consider interviewing a top SEO or Internet Marketing Company who have on staff all of the expertise spanning all of the factors discussed in this writing. To be successful you need to have a winning set of people, strategies, objectives and expectations. The best firms bring all of these factors into clear, unambiguous focus.
