Whilst February in the UK is rainy, cold and generally very depressing, in Thailand it is one of the best months of the year to enjoy a spot of scuba diving, snorkelling and mountain trekking, to name just three of the many activities to be found in this country of spectacular scenery and welcoming locals.

The climate on Thailand will, however, vary drastically from coast to coast. Whilst the west coast enjoys its dry season during the western winter months, the east coast can be ridden with monsoons making many water based activities dangerous or impossible. If it is the east coast you want to visit, try to get in touch with local tourist bureaus before you go.

If you are interested in starting your scuba diving career in Thailand then Ko Tao is a great place to begin. This is one of the cheapest locations in which to study for your first diving certificate, and several companies will offer you inclusive accommodation when you book a diving course with them. The bigger, better advertised companies are not necessarily any better than the smaller ones, so use online reviews as your guide instead.

Krabi is ...
... the Thai capital of climbing. Book an excursion from one of the many hostels and hotels here and kayak your way to Ao Nang, where you''ll find some of the most breathtaking climbing opportunities on the planet.

If you prefer trekking, then Ko Chang is the Thai destination for you. The national parks here will take you through a variety of spectacular natural terrain and you will discover all kinds of plant life along the way. A must for all plant lovers.

For a greater sample of Thailand''s immense biodiversity, head to Khao Yai. The national parks here are equipped with a host of wonderfully friendly and enthusiastic naturalist and ecologist guides who will happily show you a few examples the local wildlife. Bear in mind that some of these tours will not be for the faint hearted.

For some quiet beach time, head to Ko Turatao and the surrounding islands, instead. This idyllic corner of the world, just north of the Malaysian border, will provide you with miles of unspoiled beachscape all to yourself.

If your flights connect from frenetic Bangkok, then make sure you take the opportunity to explore a little of Thailand''s rich cultural history. Palaces and temples are abundant here, and once you''ve had your fill you can cool off and chill out in one of the city''s many exhaustive shopping malls.
