Holidaying In Porto
Porto is the capital of the Northern Region of Portugal and is the second largest city in the country. An industrial centre that has been a centre for trading for centuries, it is also a city that has retained its unique cultural identity and its historical architecture.
The river Douro runs through the city and a great day out is to take a river cruise. Breathtaking views across the river and out to the Atlantic Ocean can be had from the tops of the many hills that abound throughout Porto.
Those interested in the history of the area should head to the Ribeira area of Porto, the area by the river, where you will find a variety of Porto hotels located ideally to begin your exploration of the World Heritage area. Walking through its mysterious winding streets and alleyways is always a pleasure.
Culture vultures should definitely explore the Boavista area of Porto. Boavista is home to the concert hall, the Casa de Musica, literally the House of Music, as well as the Fundacao de Serralves, the Museum of Modern Art at Serralves, which has a beautiful garden where you can relax and soak up the sunshine as well ...
... as the art.
Six bridges connect the Ribeira area of Porto with Gaia, the port wine centre of the city, if not the country. Port connoisseurs will find much to excite them here! The six bridges all offer beautiful views of the Douro river.
One of the great delights of any Portuguese holiday is the food, and Porto is home to some of the best eateries in the country. Renowned for its fresh fish, the foodies amongst you can also get hold of the freshest local produce - from meat and fish to fruit and veg - at the central Mercado do Bolhao.
There are a great number of delicious riverside cafes, all offering great views of the river. While you are there, make sure to try the two dishes that Porto is famous for. Tripas a moda do Porto is a traditional tripe soup that has been cooked in the city for centuries, while Francesinha is bread stuffed with meats and cooked in a spicy cheese sauce.
The city of Porto is also a great footballing city, thanks to its hugely successful football team FC Porto. The team stadium - the Dragao Stadium - is a modern architectural marvel, and if you are booking your trip in advance, it may be worth booking your holiday to coincide with a Champions League match there.
