Golfing In Porto
If you are heading to Porto and are hoping to fit some golfing into your trip, then you are in luck. Porto has a host of golf courses and resorts to choose from, ranging from modern resorts to some of the oldest courses in Europe, and all are served by conveniently located Porto hotels.
If you are visiting the city of Porto itself and do not have the time to travel outside of the city to golf, then fear not! The Quinta do Fojo course is located just over the bridge from Porto city and at 6-holes long, you can fit in a round on your lunch break.
The immaculate Estela Golf Club is located near to Povoa de Varzim, with an idyllic setting next to the River Alto. This sandy river beach course offers an unusual golfing experience, with there being so little vegetation around. The course is challenging due to its exposure to influencing winds, and has hosted the Portuguese Open.
Designed by Frank Gordan and Artur Mariani and built in 1931, the Miramar course at Porto is one of the oldest in the country. Located by the north coast of Portugal, Miramar affords some dramatic views out across the Atlantic, as well ...
... as a challenging split-level green. All of this, and the grounds are beautifully kept too.
Home to the longest running golf competition in the world, the Skeffington Cup, the Oporto Golf Club has a long and fascinating history. The course is one of the oldest in all of Europe, dating back to 1890, while the Skeffington Cup has been played there every year since 1891, even through both of the World Wars.
A relatively recent newcomer is the course at Ponte de Lima. Built in 1995, this course is still set high enough to give you beautiful views of the countryside that surrounds it, but it is located far enough inland as to be unaffected by the sometimes strong winds of the Atlantic.
The Quinta da Barca course at Esposende is a popular one, despite only being a 9-hole course. Thanks to its beautiful setting by the River Cavada, the onsite hotel and its very own boat marina it makes the perfect golfing getaway. The 9-hole element makes it a perfect place for beginner golfers too.
If you are looking for views, you will be hard pressed to find a more scenic golf spot than Amarante. The Amarante course at Quinta da Deveza is a hilltop course, boasting fantastic views, lush courses, and some challenging slopes that will help you to improve your game no end.
