Hospice Of St. Catherine In Old Town Rhodes
The Hospice of St. Catherine being developed in 1391-92 is situated on the old Rhodes Town. It was built under the command of grand master Heredia, by the Italian Domenico d'Allemagna. He was the admiral of the Order of the Knights of St. John (Knights Hospitaller).
The Foundation Charter of the Hospice (1391) reveals that it was constructed quite near to the walls leading towards the Gate of St. Catherine (1465). Being an alluring Rhodes accommodation of its time, it stills carries the coats of arms of 1516.
This unique Rhodes accommodation (Hospice) was established only for the illustrious guests of the Order, who enjoyed its pleasures from 1394-95. The traveler, Niccole de Martoni describes this highly luxurious Rhodes accommodation as a most eye-catching building which carries a variety of marvelous rooms having unique beds.
It was enjoyed to the maximum extent by the local aristocracy of that period. The infrastructure of this highly attractive hospice of the aristocracy of the ancient times is quite interesting as it carries a central hub along with the axis of the square. It assembles almost ...
... all the business related activities of the town.
The Hospice of St. Catherine was basically meant to build in such a way that the officials and guests of the Knights could feel at home in this Rhodes Accommodation during their stay in Rhodes. At the time of cordoning the town by the Ottomans in 1480 and then by the jolts of earthquake in 1481, the infrastructure was highly damaged. After that, it was under the process of rebuilding till 1516.
Later on, the eastern part of Hospice was highly damaged by the Allied bombing during Second World War in 1944. Many other events took place after that and in 1986, the Hospice and 20 other buildings and state owned properties were handed over to the reinstatement plan of the Office of the Medieval Town (founded in October 1985).
The restoration of the infrastructure in the next ten years was indeed an intricate process which involved a number of factors including accommodation of hitherto within the Hospice (1985 to 1995), archaeological probing of the location (1987 to 1993), urgent rescue measures and lot more.
After a long struggle, the Hospice was rebuilt again in such a beautiful way that it attracts the attention of the visitors. Nowadays; a wide range of people from different races, origins, ethnicities, and around the globe come and visit this archaeological site to make their Rhodes Holidays an outstanding memory.
People visiting Rhodes (Greece) must come and see the splendor of the Hospice of St. Catherine during their vacations. Enjoyment during your trip while visiting this place is guaranteed as said by various tourists who visited this site earlier.
