From its origins in the Middle Ages, when people used to give free rein to the fun and joy during the week before Lent, the Carnival has been a popular holiday that is still celebrated in many parts of the world. The "Festival of Meat" (etymologically, the word carnival is derived from Italian "carne ...
... vale," which means "farewell meat"), in which people literally got sick of eating meat, came to an end with the beginning of Lent, the 40 days of recollection and reflection that precede Easter.
