Having inadequate auto insurance is not something that you should be happy about. It may seem okay when you are not involved in a claim to have inadequate cover. However, if there was suddenly a need to claim, you could seriously come to regret the decision. There really is no way of upping the coverage once you have been involved in an accident and need to claim. Sadly, this is the gamble we all take with all types of auto insurance. You may never need to claim, which in the long run will be a good thing, but if you are inadequately insured and there is a need to claim, it could prove devastatingly costly if you insurance doesn't cover your needs.

The main reason why so many U.S. motorists have inadequate auto insurance is sadly a desire to save money. Using the online search tools, many car owners see what, on the face of it, seems to be an excellent deal on their auto insurance renewal. Clearly, they will be saving money and they become slightly blinded to anything else. This means that they fail to read the actual policy schedule properly and do not notice that this new policy provides a significantly lower level ...
... of coverage in one or more areas. They continue to drive their car on the new policy, assuming that they have swapped like for like.

Check Your Policy Thoroughly
Each element of the policy needs to be checked and compared before any decisions are made, and you should never sign up or agree to anything unless you can see the full breakdown of the coverage levels. If they are not immediately obvious, simply request to see them. One of the things you need to consider is any state requirement for levels of insurance you must have. If you fail to spot that a policy on offer doesn't meet the state requirements and take it out anyway, you could end up with a very large fine for being in breach of your state's requirements.

There are ways to reduce your premium without lowering the level of coverage, keeping it adequate for your needs. Simple ideas can help more than you realize. For example, consider what safety devices are fitted in your car. Having devices fitted that make it more difficult for the car to be stolen will lower the premium you pay. If you need to lower the premiums significantly, then you are going to also need to consider things like the type of car that you drive. Luxury cars are very nice but they do come with a higher premium when it comes to getting auto insurance and ensuring that you are keeping it at an adequate level.

Consider your deductible level. This is the amount of money you have to pay out before the insurance will kick in. Having your deductible set at $50 will cost you substantially more in premiums than having it set at $250. Consider an amount that you feel you can realistically lay your hands on should the need arise, and ask for this to be set as your deductible level. Hopefully, you will never need to make a claim anyway, in which case you will have lowered your premiums for the year and your gamble will have paid off. However, if there is an accident, the amount you have to pay is still within easy reach and you will not be panicking about how to find such a sum at short notice.

As it is such an important point, it is worth restating that at no point should you ever consider taking inadequate insurance just to save yourself money on the monthly premium. In the event of needing to claim, the amount that the policy falls short by could be thousands of dollars. When compared to saving just 10 or 20 dollars a month, you can see how silly it would be to end up with a bill that financially cripples you for years to come.
