Marketing department in any organization is critical to boost sales rate. Sales and marketing teams work together in selling the products or services of the company. With the emergence of Internet as a new selling and marketing platform, the subject of Internet Marketing has gained immense importance. In fact for companies who only have Internet as selling and distribution platform, Internet marketing is the most important way to create awareness of their products or services and generate revenues.

Internet marketing is also called as web marketing, online marketing or simply eMarketing. Internet marketing includes a number of sub-strategies. For example, email marketing which involves sending emails to thousands and millions of potential buyers is part of Internet marketing strategy. Similarly, having banner ads or online product demonstrations are also part of Internet Marketing. Over the past couple of years, the patterns of net surfing have changed. Previously people used to remember website names and start surfing from that website itself. But with the number of websites growing in leaps and bounds and with emergence ...
... of smart fast search engines like Yahoo! and Google, people often start with these sites and then go to the site which is displayed in the search result pages. This subtle change in initiation of a web surfing session has given rise to Search Engine Optimization. Websites follow different strategies to be displayed on the first few search result pages. People also pay search engines to list their website on their first result page when the internet surfer enters specific words in the search engine. These words are commonly called as keywords. Search engine marketing is one of the newest ways of Internet marketing.

Internet marketing techniques can be applied to many businesses. Its foremost usage is in electronic commerce where users buy online from specific websites or from auction websites like eBay. If there is nothing to sell, one can use the website as an advertisement board for other people's products or services. Hence a newspaper website can attract users based on its content and hope that they would click on the banner advertisements which lead them to a different company's website. The newspaper website is often paid rental for the banner it hosts and also the number of clicks netizens make on the banner. Apart form these two; there are also other business models. But they are mostly in the nascent stage of development.

Internet marketing, though gaining huge popularity also has its limitations. Ecommerce revenues are still only a fraction of the total revenues for any big company. Also only a fraction of world's population has access to Internet. Payment methods, especially through credit cards, are considered by most to be highly insecure. Moreover frauds such as phishing and identity thefts are limiting the acceptance of Internet as a tool for regular buying. Hence, it is rare to find someone shop items worth thousands of dollars over the internet. People usually buy small items such as greeting cards, books or music CDs. Constraints in bandwidth and frequent drop in connections are other problems.

In spite of all the problems, everyone accepts that Internet is the market place of the future. Hence, one should always stay update on Internet marketing techniques and continue to use them in the best possible ways.
