However according to an American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) survey in 2008, the starting salary was around $14.70 per hour and $19 with five years experience.
Last year, medical coding specialists employed by hospitals earned an average of $16 per hour, although those in acute care hospitals earned around $18. Whereas contract employees, who typically work for a third party agency earn about $19 per hour. On the other hand, medical coders who have their own business earn about $22 per hour.
