What No Longer Works In Internet Marketing?
Internet marketing and SEO has finally grown out of its infancy. Over the last few years, several strategies have been developed that have allowed online businesses to market their business and increase their market share. Many of these strategies still work well, however, technology has changed, meaning some of these technologies are not as effective as they once were.
Mainly, the thing to understand is that search engines have gotten smarter. Because of this, some strategies that used to work very well are no longer be effective; or at least as effective. When looking at your marketing strategy, one of the first questions you should be asking yourself is if each of your strategies will be effective with search engines. You will quickly see that some of your strategies must be tossed out.
1. Keyword Stuffing †At one time, filling your page with as many keywords as possible would lead spiders straight to you. This couldn’t be farther from the truth now. Overuse of your keywords will actually drive your rankings down.

... of the first things search engines looked at when crawling a site. The spiders gleaned information on things like site organization and keywords to properly rank a site. Today the Meta tag isn’t considered nearly as important. For this reason, many webmasters have tweaked the information listed in meta tags. It’s still a great idea to include important information in the Meta tag †just don’t count on that information impacting your rankings the way it used to.
3. Blasting a single article †At one time, you could write one article and post it all over the web. Now, search engines recognize duplicate content, and so content must be fresh and unique to be effective.
4. Quick Results †A few years ago, you could count on SEO to return results within a few days or weeks. Now, effective SEO can take months. Luckily, Google Adwords can provide effective marketing in the interim. While you wait for organic results to show up, paid search can bring in immediate traffic.
5. Quantity of Backlinks †The quantity of backlinks do not mean much in terms of SEO. The quality is also very important. Google requires that websites acquire backlinks from multiple sources with different C-class IPs, not to mention relevant backlinks.
In general, onsite optimization, while necessary, is no longer the “holy grail†of SEO. It’s necessary as a foundation to generate results; however, alone, onsite elements like metadata, keyword meta information et al will not get you where you need to be on the Search Engine Result Pages (SERPs).
Your website content can no longer be static. Sites that don’t regularly add new, unique, non-duplicate content will not be visible on the search engines. Further onsite content alone is not enough … you must publish and syndicate your content on respected high ranking sites to generate the best Backlinks. Sites without quality Backlinks from online publishers, social bookmarkers and social media sites will no longer be competitive in the search world.
It is interesting to note that paid ads or pay per click ads can still be effective †but marketers must change the way they utilize them. It used to be enough to develop an ad, bid on a position and leave it at that. Today, effective marketers carefully review analytical data regarding their ads and are constantly changing their focus, position and keyword usage.
Always remember that a truly effective campaign will take dedication and work. The more care that is taken with an advertising campaign the more effective and profitable the campaign. Carefully review your campaign and trim away any pieces that are no longer effective. Add emphasis to those areas that are working to maximize the ROI. This must be done regularly in order to stay ahead of the curve.
