Traditions Of Mothers Day Over The Years
The tradition of celebrating Mothers Day, as a special day for all hard working mums everywhere, is upheld in many countries around the world. In the UK the tradition goes all the way back to the 16th century, which means that an awful lot of mothers have been honoured down the ages. In the early years of Mothers Day celebrations, servants and apprentices were released from the work duties and allowed to go home to visit their mothers for the weekend and the idea of treating our mothers to wonderful gifts and surprises was born.
It is believed that its origins began with the festival of the mother of Greek gods in Ancient Greece and was passed to the Romans who celebrated Mothers Day around the Ides of March. In the UK and the rest of Europe, Mothers Day or Mothering Sunday as it was formerly called, is part of the Christian calendar, falling on the fourth Sunday in Lent, in honour of the mother church and the Virgin Mary. The Mothers Day tradition of taking over the chores from our mothers for the day is a long standing one and continues to this day. After all, what better way for your mum to celebrate her own special ...
... day than to do absolutely nothing at all?
Throughout the world, Mothers Day falls on different dates and often falls in line with other special occasions that celebrate mothers and women in general. Norway celebrates Mothers Day on the second Sunday in February, whilst the vernal equinox on March 21st is the day for mothers in many Middle Eastern countries. The second Sunday in May is perhaps the most popular date for enjoying this occasion, with countries such as Australia, Austria, Cuba, Cyprus, Finland, Germany, Greece, Denmark, Iceland, South Africa and many more honouring their mums.
In fact, Mothers Day is being celebrated somewhere in the world almost every month of the year. Kenya celebrates this special day at the end of June, with India pampering the mothers in August, Argentina in October, Russia in November and Panama and Indonesia in December. This just goes to show what an important event Mothers Day is and with so many nations and their populations celebrating their mothers, it can not be stressed enough how we should all appreciate and spoil our mums on Mothers Day with Mother's Day Gifts.
You can understand how Mothers Day should not go unnoticed. It is a big day for our lovely mothers and for their offspring as well, as families come together in a joyful celebration of a wonderful woman. If you are one of her grown up children, you probably no longer live at home any more and although you may phone her up regularly and catch up on all the family stories, you might find it hard to pop over for an hour or two and see her in person. A face to face visit means so much to our mums, especially if she does not get to see us as often as she would like. If you live too far away for an impromptu visit, then a gorgeous Mother's Day Gifts will fill her heart with joy and she will know that you are thinking of her on her special day.
Long ago the traditional gift to offer your mother would be flowers and in many far eastern countries this is still the case. Instead of presenting her with a bunch of flowers that are bound to have withered and died within a week, give her a floral Mothers Day gift that will last. The Pocket Garden Mini Gerbera gift has everything needed for a glorious and colourful display of gerberas. These are very trendy and popular annual flowers that thrive well indoors or out, but do require warmth for germination of the seeds.
They are very easy to grow and the handy pocket contains the soil and seeds, requiring only that the sealed packet is snipped open and placed on a windowsill with water added. Then your mum can wait for the seedlings to appear and delight in the lovely display. If your mum enjoys pottering around the garden, she will love the William Morris Daisy Secateurs with an easy lock and Teflon coated blades to ensure longer lasting sharpness.
These bypass secateurs have beautifully decorated handles and are great for cutting herself a bunch of home grown flowers straight from the flower bed. Sit your mum down in front of the TV and give her a lovely Mothers Day card with a big difference and one that includes a 60 minute DVD of some of the UK's finest grand gardens. Flowers say just how special you think your mum is and are a truly traditional gift, so give her the best Mother's Day Gifts.
