Five Things You Should Never Wear To A Job Interview
You only have once chance to make that first impression and on a job interview you need to be remembered for your professionalism and not negative thoughts on how you presented yourself. It is surprising the poor judgment on clothes and accessories that people display on an interview and then wonder why they didn't get the job. Even the most casual jobs require you to give the employer enough respect to arrive to the interview properly dressed.
1. Short skirts - Yes, Amanda Woodward on Melrose Place made this a worldwide acceptance in all her travels that this was professional business attire but in the real word and especially on the first interview it is not recommended. A skirt should cover your thighs when you sit down. No matter how great your legs might be, you want an employer to not be distracted and actually listen to why you are the valuable pick for the job.
2. Improper tie - You many not realize it but a tie can make or break your first impression. Ties should be at least three inches wide and be conservative. If the interviewer is focused on your bright patterned tie it is very difficult for ...
... them to pay attention to you just how valuable you are. According to image consultants, burgundy is the top picked color for ties.
3. Accessories - Employers do not want to see your backpack or your purse. A portfolio or briefcase is acceptable. Never have sunglasses on your head, hanging from your pocket or anywhere else. Jewelry should be kept to a minimum. One pair of earrings for women and perhaps a ring and a simple bracelet. Men should never wear earrings and only a watch and either a wedding band or a class ring.
4. Hair, makeup and nails - Makeup on a man is not welcome at an interview, nor is heavy makeup on a woman. Keep it simple and natural. Neutral or bare well groomed nails are ideal and they should not be too long. Hair should be professional with no colored hair extensions or outrageous accessories. Employers prefer a female to have her hair in a chic simple ponytail and men should be clean and not loaded with product.
5. Perfume or cologne - Nothing can ruin an interview faster than wearing perfume or cologne. For many people the smell can irritate allergies or the interviewer could just not care for it. They will be plotting the entire time how to end this interview quickly and not listen to anything you say no matter how perfect you might be for the job.
It is important to remember, you are not trying to make a fashion statement. You are trying to get a job. You need to look professional without looking like you tried too hard. Save the flashy ties and stilettos for when you go out to celebrate the new job, after you're hired.
