Yoga is a holistic fitness experience meant to improve the state and functions of the mind, body, and the spirit of a person. Contrary to the stereotyped and impossible-to-perform bends and arches that yoga is portrayed as, it is, in fact, a well-guided and instructed workout of the entire body. Since its primary purpose is fitness and healing, all the accessories used while performing yoga should be completely in tune and chosen well, otherwise, it may lead to injury. One of the most important accessories is the yoga mat. This article is a guide to find the perfect yoga mat.

Tip #1: Materials
There are various materials that yoga mats are made from. The right material for you depends on a lot of things, for example, allergies, level of yoga proficiency, grip required, etc.

• PVC – this material is suitable for entry-level yogis. It has decently good properties of stickiness, comfort, and durability. The only problem with this material is that it is not eco-friendly.

• Foam – this can be called the eco-friendly counterpart of the PVC mat. It has the same characteristics, ...
... and also, finds more favor with environmentally conscious yogis. People with latex allergies, however, this mat is NOT for you.

• Rubber – this material also contains latex, therefore those allergic to it should purchase a yoga mat of some other material. Rubber contains all the good properties of a yoga mat, providing good balance and grip.

• Cotton – cotton is the all-natural alternative to the above options. It provides good grip and is friendly on the skin. It is a thin mat, therefore those who cannot take the hard floor should buy something with a bit more cushioning.

Tip #2: Thickness
The thickness of a yoga mat is what decides how accurately you hit your yoga postures. A thin mat may be too hard on your knees, while a mat too thick may be too soft to achieve a good balance while doing yoga. The most commonly used thickness is 1/8th of an inch, and it is also the standard size. It gives the perfect balance between comfort and balance.

Tip #3: Stickiness
The stickiness of a yoga mat is a good kind of stickiness which helps you maintain your posture. It is not a gooey or squishy feeling. The best stickiness is displayed by PVC and foam mats, followed by rubber. The only problem is that PVC and foam mats lose this property when dirty.

Tip #4: Texture
Textured mats are suitable for those people who sweat profusely through their feet. A wet mat without texture increases the risk of slipping, which a textured mat prevents well.
Choose wisely!
