Music lovers should watch out for the Broadway Play Memphis, currently running at the Shubert Theatre, New York. This new musical revives the memories of segregation and racial violence. The story is told through the journey of a black singer whose career is hindered by her inability to perform in segregated clubs and a white Deejay who helps in popularizing her music through radio and her journey to stardom. Although their collaboration results in the birth of a soulful music, the society and the world finds it difficult to accept their relationship.

In one of the biggest compliments to Memphis, as the bastion of social change, the musical is loosely based on the story of Dewey Philips, a Memphis DJ who was one of the first to play black music in the 1950's. The play is written by David Bryan of Bon Jovi fame and Joe DiePietro's book "I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change." The play premiered in the 2003-04 season at both the North Shore Music Theatre, Massachusetts, and TheatreWorks California.
