Kapalabhati

Kapalabhati, it is considered as an important part of the Shatkriya or also termed as Shatkarma. The Shatkriya or Shatkarma are 6 yogic techniques or ways of cleansing the body in the Hatha yoga tradition. These Shatkriyas are prescribed to be done before starting the Hatha yoga asanas, it is a kind of preparing as well as cleansing our system i.e., the body and the mind before going on with the Asanas similar to washing our hands before having food. It is a part of the Pranayama techniques of breath control.
Kapalabhati is famously called as Skull-shining breathing, this name is derived from the first half of the word kapal which in Sanskrit means ‘skull’ and the later part bhati is termed as shining. Here skull includes all the parts underneath it like brain and other nerves connected to nose and all other parts of the brain. It is believed that by regular practice of kapalabhati, the skull or the face of the aspirant gets illuminated and looks bright, thus the name is termed as skull-shining breath technique. Not only the forehead glows but the intellect gets refined and sharpened. This definition in a way limits ...
... the infinite benefits one can derive by practicing this powerful technique. It is considered one of the best cure for sinus related problems and also acts as detoxifier helping in release of toxins from the body via the outgoing breath.
Kapalbhati is a technique of breathing which involves short, strong and forceful exhalation of breath wherein inhalation is automatic. There are three forms of kapalabhati, they are Vatakrama kapalabhati, Vyutkrama kapalbhati, and Sheetkrama kapalbhati. Vatakrama kapalbhati is a technique which is similar to bhastrika, except that the active part is the exhalation and the inhalation is passive which is quite opposite to that of the normal breathing. Vyutkrama kapalabhati is like the jala neti which involves sniffing of water through nostrils and letting the water flow down and out from the mouth. The last one is Sheetkrama kapalabhati which is the reverse version of vyutkrama kapalabhati, here water has to be taken from mouth and expelled via the nose.
