Introduction

Halesi Mahadev in Khotang is popular destination among Hindus, Kirant and Buddhist community. It is one of pilgrimage site of Nepal and thousands of people visit this unique and equally important place annually. Halesi Mahadevsthan lies at a distance of twenty-six kilometers to the west of the district headquarters Diktel Bazaar, Halesi Mahadevsthan is one of the most popular religious destinations in this district. Large number of Hindu devotees throng here. It lies in a cave with two feet tall image of Shiva Linga. There are two pillars to the immediate north of it. Halesi Tour is one of the most popular tour among Nepalese community.

A popular myth is associated with it. It is believed that the sinners cannot pass through the narrow passage of the two pillars except those who confess the sin if they have committed any sinful activity in their lives. According to a legend, a powerful giant Bhishmasur by attained boon from the Lord Shiva but chased the Lord himself to kill and possess his wife Parbati. Lord saved his life by hiding in this cave.

A Basaha Cave lies close to this Haleshi Mahadev. The lime mixed water dropped from the upper part has formed stalagmite divine images of Shiva Linga, Ganesh, Bishnu and Devi. The Hindu devotees throng to the place during sixteen days religious ceremony held in Ramanawami. Furthermore, people believe that Haleshi is believe to fulfill the long-cherished dreams of his devotees like children for childless couple, rain during draught, wealth for the poor and cure for the sick.

Animal sacrifices are prohibited here. It hag become the center of attraction for both the tourists as well as Hindu devotees. External part of the cave comprises four outlets. Its interior part is terribly dark and suffocating as well. The natural holes of the cave give a view of the external world. The blow of the air inside the cave produces sounds like that of conch. The deeper part of the cave offers worship to Shivalinga. Naturally formed cow teats images drop water inside the cave. Devotees offer cow milk in its interior part.
