Food Sugar May Not Be What's Giving You Diabetes, But Here’s A Cure
If we were to say that the sugar level in our blood is only affected by the amount of sugar we consume, we would be contributing to an inaccurate though unfortunately widespread misconception. The truth of the matter is that it is not just the food that we eat or the amount of sugar that we orally take, but also several other external factors often beyond our control, that are responsible for the fluctuations in the body sugar level.
Everything around us is happening at a very fast pace, one which can frequently seem wildly out of control and can divest us of our agency. Pushed along by the tide, we are forced to work like machines and, as we are beginning to slowly realise, this results in a totally unhealthy and ultimately utterly unsustainable lifestyle. Diabetes, or diabetes mellitus as it is referred to by the doctor, is a disease in which the glucose level in the blood increases. The reason for this increase in the blood sugar level is either inadequate production of glucose or the cells of the body not responding properly to the insulin or it can be due to both reasons. There are basically three types of diabetes, and these are as follows:
1) Type 1 diabetes- In this condition it is the body itself that is at fault, as it stops producing the required insulin. Type 1 is usually diagnosed in early adulthood, generally before the diabetic reaches their forties or during the teenage years. Only 10% cases of the total number of diabetes patients are of type 1.
2)Type 2 diabetes- In this condition, it is either the body that does not produce enough insulin or it is the problem of the cells do not react to the insulin, as they should. The vast majority of diabetes cases, as many as approximately 90% of them, are of type 2.
3)Gestational diabetes- Women are affected by this type of diabetes. It occurs during pregnancy when the sugar level in the blood is too high and the insulin produced by the body is unable to regulate it, resulting in gestational diabetes.
It is obvious that tackling diabetes would require finding a solution primarily to diabetes cases that are of Type 2, since this is the kind that affects most diabetics. This is also the kind of diabetes whose origins lie in the unhealthy living conditions that one subjects oneself to due to work pressure, inadequate rest, extreme stress, and so on. This causes factors such as excess body weight, unhealthy diet, stress, and physical inactiveness coming into play and contributing to the increase in the blood sugar level. More and more worryingly, sheer carelessness in taking even the most straightforward decisions, such as deciding one’s diet leads to the escalation of the blood sugar level. For example, excessive consumption of junk food leads to increase in body weight, which can result in a high risk of Type 2 diabetes.
Therefore, it is crucial to understand what a major role can be played by adopting consciously healthy habits in our daily routines. If we keep a few things in mind, we can prevent diabetes to a large extent. To that effect, here are some easy steps that can be followed:
• Managing proportion of carbohydrates in one’s diet, as carbohydrates have the most severe impact on the blood sugar level.
• Eating too little or too much can also make the blood sugar level fluctuate. Thus, the daily intake of a proper diet is of the utmost importance.
• Beverages with a high fructose (the kind of sugar found in fruits) or sucrose (a naturally occurring sugar in plants) content should be avoided.
• Make a regular exercise plan. A thirty-minute exercise every day for an adult is necessary to regulate the blood sugar level.
• Stress-reducing techniques should be practised. Breathing techniques and meditation are generally found to be very effective. Monitoring stress levels is important because it increases the the sugar level in the blood easily.
• Medicines should be taken on time, insulin should be stored properly and an appropriately healthy diet should be taken with the medicines.
• Regular check ups should be held and new medication should be started only with the attending doctor’s consent.
