When creating HVAC ducts, quality is key for long term endurance and efficiency. Many different materials are used to create acceptable ductwork. Each has its own function and brings something different to the manufacturing of ductwork. Builders have options, allowing for the use of the best duct for the job.

While in the past, ductwork was normally made out of sheet metal, this is now not always the case. The sheet metal method first requires installation and then a second step of action. Installers have to also install insulation. Reducing the number of installation steps from two to one, ductwork made of aluminum is now a very acceptable option. Aluminum allows for easier installation and a lighter weight. It is also easier to customize a duct made with aluminum, which can be done on site as a result. The finishing materials include glue, aluminum tape and sealant.

Not all ductwork is made out of metal; some is fabricated out of fiberglass duct boards. This type of duct work is also pre-insulated. The fiberglass works as thermal insulation and also helps to absorb noise created by the system. Finishing materials ...
... include staples and tape with a metal back. Though duct tape is associated with ductwork, it does not have the long term stability that is required for this application as it loses its adhesive abilities over time.

A more flexible ductwork design is also available. It is commonly referred to as flex. It is generally made of a metal coil of wire that is covered with a very pliable plastic. This ductwork requires an insulation application. Traditionally, builders in the United States rely on glass wool for insulation. Elsewhere, polyester fibers and wool are both popular choices. The insulation must be covered in the ductwork. Both polyethylene and metalized polyethylene terephthalate are commonly used in this endeavor. Though flexible ductwork has a few advantages, it must be noted that it has a higher pressure loss rate than other ducts made out of different materials. It also has the ability to create problematic kinks.

The choice of materials available to create ductwork even extends to fabrics. When ducts are created out of fabric, they are referred to as textile ducts, air socks or even duct socks. The material used in its creation is a special fabric created of permeable polyester. Using fabric allows designers to choose from many colors. This will aid in coordinating the ductwork with the interior design. Textile ducts require a finishing touch. A coating of PVC will make it a low to no maintenance duct.

Each available material offers both positives and negatives which must be weighed against its intended application. With a number of ductwork materials available to choose from, builders can ensure that they will have the best one for the job. It does not have to be a one type fits all mentality; rather, it is more customized to its environment, needs and intended application. This benefits efficiency, durability and reliability for the HVAC system.
