Series and parallel connected blower installations are often used to meet performance ranges beyond normal single stage blower capacities. For systems that require high ststic pressure, and especially high pressure TOGETHER with high temperature (where standard multi stage, positive displacement, screw, or regenerative type blowers can not be used) series of single stage centrifugal blowers can be used. Many times additional blower in the system can be advantageous. For instance, where two blowers are operating in series and one breaks down, the other may be able to "limp" the system along while the necessary maintenance is performed. Having on blower continue in operation can often allow limited production while the other is being repaired. Fans) operate at elevated temperatures and draw the air stream through the combustion chamber, then push it through pollution control equipment. Forced Draft (F.D. Fans) or Combustion Air Fans push the air stream into the boiler combustion chamber. Multi-Fuel Burning Power Boilers are used to create steam for different power needs. Induced Draft Fans are typically AMCA arrangement 3, single or double inlet with inlet box(es). Wheels often require abrasion resistant construction with radial tip or backwardly curved blades. Combustion Air FD Fans are typicallyconstructed of carbon steel, and utilize airfoil or backward inlined blade design. The following criteria should be considered for effective use of Positive Ventilation:
- The cone of air must cover the intake opening. The fan must be placed the correct distance from the structure such as that the cone of air forms a seal around the opening.
- The size and location of the discharge is important. The discharge, if at all possible should be as high and far away from the intake as is practical. The discharge size should be between 3/4 to 1/2 times the intake. This may not always be possible as the fire may have already dictated discharge locations and sizes; but whenever there is a choice, the above criteria should be used.
- It is important to control the ait flow between the intake and discharge. Positive pressure ventilation can move air long distances if proper control is maintained by opening and closing doors, windows, etc. It is important that firefighters understand not to open the structure too much: ie breaking windows, etc.(read entire article)(posted on: 2013-08-07)
