The History Of Jeanswear By: kelly
The first use of denim as a cotton material dates as far back as the 17th century, when it appeared in upholstery, work pants and awnings, ship's sails and cowboy jeans – the fabric of hardworking, honest labour. The origin of its name is widely believed to be an Anglicism of the French for 'serge de Nimes' – the serge fabric, made in Nimes, France.
By the 18th century, denim cloth was made only of cotton and was used to make strong and durable men's clothing – valued for the way it lasted repeat washing. The famous Levi Strauss Company was created in 1873, with a patented denim jeans process featuring the famous Levi metal rivets. Levi had noticed that miners in the San Francisco gold rush needed strong and sturdy work pants, and he worked with his partner Jacob Davis to produce their patented designs of 'waist overalls' with copper rivets, in the famous blue denim, and also duck – which was a thick material which fell out of decline in favour of denim, as it was said to feel like 'wearing a tent'. These overalls proved to be a great success, and Levi and Jacob moved into producing jackets and outwear, as well as muslin shirts. When Levi Strauss died in 1902, he passed the successful business to his nephews.
Over time, demand outstripped supply and the Strauss' needed to find a new denim mill, as competition from the South was causing their New England supplier to struggle. By 1915 it was buying most of its denim from North Carolina and by the 1920s Levi's waist overalls were leading the men' work pants market in America. This only increased further in the 1930s, when the era of Hollywood westerns arrived, and Levi's jeans became a high status fashion item, associated with the freedom and individualism of cowboys and the glamorous actors that played them. Heavy advertising spread their popularity across America and overseas.
In the Second World War, American GIs were known to take their favourite jeans overseas for action, to keep them safe! After the war, Denim pants became increasingly associated with leisure activities of American people. Zippers began to be used in the 50s, and jeans became associated with teenage rebellion – being featured in films of the time, and banned from many schools and colleges. During this same decade, the company began to export its products worldwide as word spread. This new youth market was reflected in the name 'jean' being formally adopted by Levi's in the 60s, as jeans flooded Europe and Asian markets, and became a symbol of youth, ideas, individuality and leisure.
By the 70s, flares and bell-bottom jeans were king, with heavy advertising and marketing continuing to increase the market. Decorated jeans became an early craze in 70s America, making jeans the canvas material for expressing personality. In the 80s, bleached, ripped, skin tight and faded jeans came into fashion, and the designer jean was born. Nowadays the world's biggest celebrities all wear jeans, and this staple item is featured in innovative new ways in every catwalk collection, whether it be faded boyfriend jeans for dress-down day casual, or high glamour designer skinny fit jeans with a tuxedo jacket and slinky top and heels for the night time.(read entire article)(posted on: 2011-06-23)

Prolong The Service Life Of Jeans By: kelly
First of all, choose a durable pair. A long-lasting pair of jeans begins at the register. Since fabrics vary by brand, knowing the markers of durability can mean the difference between denims that live for decades or die on washing machine impact. "Check the inside of the bottom leg hem of the jeans for a colorful stitch," advises Cronk. "That's a sign it's selvage denim." Made from old-school looms that impeccably stitched to prevent unraveling, the over-sized machinery fell out of favor after 1969. But you can't beat the durability. It's why vintage jeans last longer than a lot of newly made pairs.
Thankfully, a resurgence of the weaving technique has returned to the racks, and even invaded lines at chain stores like The Gap. If you can't find a selvage stitched denim, Cronk suggest you weigh out your options. Literally. "A longer-lasting jean is simply heavier, because the fabric is thicker," he says. "Any jeans that weigh over 12oz or 13oz will last you a long time while the lighter jeans like jeggings weigh only about 8oz and are short-lived." Some designer labels may include the weight, and custom jeans bars may even provide scales, but if you're at a loss, just hold a pair of jeans in either hand and go with the one that feels heavier.
Secondly, spot-clean first. Jeans don't always need an all-over wash. Sometimes, targeting a spot will wipe away the dirt without wearing out the shape. Levi's brand man, Chiara, keeps his secret weapon under the kitchen sink, spraying a household cleaner like Windex on a tough stain. Another method, is dabbing rubbing alcohol on worn-in grass stains. You can also use a hand-wash soap like Woolite to keep the area "behind the button-fly" smelling fresh and clean.
Thirdly, keep the blues singing. To keep your color from fading in the wash, make sure your water is cold, and your denims are turned inside out to protect from bleeding. If the damage is already done, it can help to wash your faded jeans with a dark, color-rich denim that will bleed. Another trick, courtesy of Chiara, is adding 1/8 of clear vinegar to a wash. The natural remedy adds an extra layer of color-protection.
Fourthly, protect from thinning and rips. If your jeans are due for a rugged machine wash set your dial to delicate. For detergent, Cronk suggests non-abrasive, environmentally friendly soaps that don't contain bleach or bleach-substitutes. "Even just washing your jeans without soap sometimes can give them a decent clean without wearing out their fabric," he adds. And if you'r e noticing tiny holes poking through the material, act fast. Patching up even the tiniest holes can protect the life span of thinner jeans and prevent a tear from turning into a large hole.(read entire article)(posted on: 2011-06-21)
