Agra, popular around the world due the presence of the Taj Mahal, lies in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Situated close to the national capital of Delhi, Agra is a premier destination of the world that prominently figures in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Site. Often called as Poetry in Marble, the Taj Mahal of Agra is one of the most visited places of India by both national and international tourists.
Agra is an ancient city which finds mentions in ancient texts like the Mahabharata. Known as Agravana in the earlier days, Agra owes its present fame to the reign of the Mughal Emperors who had patronized the city like no other rulers. Though it was Sikandar Lodi of the Lodi dynasty who had first made Agra his capital, it was under the Mughal rule that the city flourished.
Though Agra is famous for Taj Mahal, which is said to be a mausoleum constructed by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal, it is also known for other historic sites like Agra fort and Fatehpur Sikri. Both of these edifices also feature in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Site. Some other popular attractions of Agra are the Chini Ka rauza, Itimad-ud-Daula (Baby Taj) and which was constructed by Nurjahan, the Queen of Emperor Jehangir in memory of her father, Mariyam's tomb, Jama Masjid, Boudmath, numerous Gurudwara, Jain Temples, Churches and Mosques, among others.
